Cavort

Been having a good few days here in cold, cold, very (oh so) cold Chillcompton. What can I say?

Been sleeping. Watched The Mist (great film, by the way) and saw the Christmas Top Gear and Big Fat Quiz of the Year.

Making new year plans…

King of the Road

End of Friday: We watched the Doctor Who Christmas special, A Matter of Loaf and Death and the the new X-Files film: I Want To Believe.

Saturday: We did a bit of Scalextric, but the dust had had an effect on the track so it didn’t fair very well. Nevertheless, Alastair seemed to enjoy it… Then I got my train back to the smog of London and back home.

Sunday: After a quick overnight pit-stop, I’m back on the road, this time to Chilcompton to see my cousin. So at the moment we’re catching up.

Now you all get a very special treat, I have a video of Alastair on Christmas day playing with his new guitar toy. Hilarity ensued…

Going back to London tomorrow :-(

But then going to see my cousin on Sunday :-)

Mr. Haircut

Having a great time at my sisters. Arrived yesterday and dropped Alastair off at nursery. Feels like coming home, love it here. Millie and Daisy (AKA “the cats”) are as lovely as ever.

Today me and Baz fought the crowds at the shops (successfully, I might add). This evening I got a much needed haircut and then we all watched 24:Redemption.

As it happens, its actually Christmas Eve!!!!

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Friday: Went through the test. I passed! Won’t tell you by how much, but I definitely need to look over it again when I get a chance. After we’d gone through the test I went to Rubix (the union) to stage crew for the Credit Crunch Christmas Party!

I ended up having 5 cameras to work with, it looked great and was really good fun. To keep the Christmas spirit we had 1,500 free mince pies! Needless to say I had my fair share. (Don’t tell anyone but I managed to take 12 of them away with me. They went down well with Dad!)

The party finished at 3am and then we had to pack down the mess we had made outside the union. We had Santa’s grotto on a stage, lighting, snow machines and a gazebo to disassemble.

Finally left at 4:30am. I knew that I was going home on Saturday and I also knew that if I went to sleep I wouldn’t get up before 1pm. So I did what any sensible person would have done and stayed awake. I packed my bag, did the washing up and read a few blogs.

At 7am I left for the train station. Staying awake on the train was slightly tricky (that’s were the mince pies came in handy). Got home at 8:30am.

Time for breakfast and catching up with mum and dad. Went over to church to put up candle stands and then managed to get some sleep (well 2 hours!)

Had a fabulous night at Victoria’s, great food and great company. Watching Strictly Come Dancing was fun and who’d have thought the result! Thank you Victoria for a fantastic evening.

Sunday: Caught up on sleep. This evening I’m doing a reading at the carol service.

    Only 4 days until Christmas!

OK, so it was wicked! Pictars:

Thursday: Exam, boo! And then setting up for Christmas Flirt in Rubix tomorrow. Only one day left of my first semester! We’re almost there people.

    FYI Tuesday

Today was a good day. The “Test” this morning went well, got 67% (a 2-1). Also found out that I’m on 71% for Maths this semester. Good, good.

Sorted out a few things for stage crew on Friday and then did the Comedy Night on my own. Funny as usual and nothing went wrong so I was OK crewing on my own.

Hope everyone back home is having a good time. I’ll see you all at the weekend!

    Vidiot

WOW! What a cool few days.

Up bright and early on Wednesday to do a spot of Christmas shopping. Bought a few presents in town and then the rest online.

After lunch I went over to Rubix to help Stage Crew with setting up a big gig on Thursday. The Electronic Engineering Staff Christmas Party where staff bands performed to the audience and a panel of judges to win the coveted x-mas factor champions crown. There were 14 bands in all, 9 of which had at least one of my lecturers in.

As expected, I wound up doing video which was fantastic because I was the only one doing it. This meant I learnt an awful lot about setting up cameras, running cables, using the mixer and video PC. However, it did mean that I couldn’t have a pit cam (a camera operated from the front of the stage) and that required someone to man that camera as well.

I finished on Wednesday night with 2 cameras that could be operated with a controller (they were stationary but could be panned, tilted and zoomed) and the video PC to show bands PowerPoint presentations. I’d also set up the projector screen on stage to show the video and PowerPoint’s.

A 9am start on Thursday morning allowed me to put up another camera to focus on the judges, and tap into a security camera. Then I noticed that someone was planning to film the event with two HD cameras on the balcony, so I asked nicely and found out that one was going to be operated all night. I managed to get the output of that camera into the video mixer so I now effectively had a replacement pit cam.

With a total of 2 pan/tilt cameras, 1 stationary camera, 1 operated camera, a black and white security camera and the PowerPoint’s, I was well away.

The gig went very well and I thoroughly enjoyed doing it. So great to work video for 14 very different bands, got to try lots of ideas and styles. My entire cut of the evening (about 6 hours in total) was recorded and I’ll hopefully get a copy at some point.

Today was a recovery day. I’ve had a headache all day and just tried to relax. I might do some stage crew this evening, I’ll see how I feel.

  • Happiness: 7/10
  • Workload: 3/10
  • Last meal: Cereal (no comment)

    Moons and Horror Shows

(Just a cool name, in no way related to what I want to say)

My last lecture went fine, boring, but fine.

Then I helped with stage crew in the evening, was very informative and interesting. I didn’t get to mix in the end, but I helped out and got to see the mixing so I’ll be ready if I ever need to do it.

Today I had a Meningitis C booster. Not sure whether I’d had it before, so they just gave it to me anyway. That meant that I couldn’t do any climbing this evening. :-(

Doing some Christmas shopping tomorrow morning and then Stage Crew in the afternoon.

    These Things I’ll Never Say

This week So it has been a pretty hectic weekend and end of week. My last lectures on Friday were my last lectures, which is always good. Confusing though, so need to definitely do some revision.

Did stage crew on Friday night, 90’s night. Very 90’s, what can I say. Had a good time. (Sounds promiscuous, but wasn’t).

Saturday was a wipe-out, as always after a Friday gig. But I did watch “The Pursuit Of Happiness” with some friends, such a brilliant film.

Sunday I had a day learning how to operate the sound at a gig on a Stage Crew Training Day. Learnt a lot and am looking forward to working the sound desk at the next gig (either today or Thursday).

This week I have one lecture today and that is it. So I’ve signed up for 2 stage crew gigs and its the stage crew Christmas party on Saturday.

Haven’t been climbing for a week so will go along to that at some point. I also need to do some revision for my exams next week that don’t count for anything and will be self-marked (AKA “formative”).

Doing my laundry at the moment, FUN FUN FUN!

Hope everyone is having a great time and I’ll see you all soon!

  • Happiness: 7/10
  • Workload: 5/10
  • Last meal: Cereal returns! (what do you expect it’s 11am)
  • Thought for the day: Just as well I did enough at the weekend to avoid having to talk about Thursday night.

    Amazon MP3

It’s here! This is what I’ve been waiting for since January this year.

Amazon MP3 is an alternative to downloading music using iTunes. It is VERY cheap, you can download the new Kings Of Leon album for just £3.

So what’s the big deal? First things first, it’s only downloads, so you don’t get the actual CD. But it is incredibly cheap, whole albums from as little as £3 and singles for as little as 29p!

This is funny because last week I had a conversation with Dad and James about MP3 stores and I was saying how Amazon had promised an MP3 store in 2008, and what do you know, still 28 days to spare.

Definitely check it out, its going to be BIG. I promise you now, in 1 years time, this store will be just as big as iTunes, if not bigger. Mark my words…

  • He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother

Comedy night was gold this week, absolutely brilliant. It was fantastic having my brother there to enjoy it with.

Made a start on Maths revision, still got some ground to cover tomorrow, but otherwise quietly confident about the test on Thursday.

Managed to have a good day today, between having a maths lecture this morning and doing maths revision all day, I also had some good conversations with people (how vague can you be!)

    MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

It’s here! Officially! December, the time of advent, shopping, snow and cheap decorations.

Opened the first door on my advent calendar today, there was chocolate! It pretty much sums up my day, predictable and enjoyable.

Tesco has now changed the “confectionary” isle to the “seasonal treats” isle and is getting busier (or maybe that’s just Monday evening).

James is coming over tomorrow for Comedy Night, looks set to be a blast! I’ve also signed up for Stage Crew on Friday, Sunday and next Monday. This is my last week of full lectures before Christmas. But its not that simple. Breakdown:

    1. Maths test this Thursday (worth 16%)
    2. Maths test on the 16th (formative – not worth anything)
    3. Electronics test on the 18th (formative)

    Stuff to look forward to:

    1. Comedy night tomorrow
    2. Lecture free week next week
    3. Going to see The Fratellis in Brighton on the 17th
    4. Christmas!!

How are you celebrating Christmas this year?

    We Are Family

Where was I… I’ve completely lost my train of thought. Either way, its great to see my sis again!

Friday evening we had a good night in. Watched some Jeff Dunham and the 198th episode of “Never Mind the Buzzcocks”.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Speak to you soon (except you Bex, I’ll speak to you now!)

    T’ North

Wey Hey! The weekend is upon us. And that means seeing my Sister!

Thursday I had another night in, watching Heroes. Yesterday I had the 4 epic hours of lectures in the morning, not that great but could have been a lot worse. No surprises there.

In the afternoon it was time for the last lab session before Christmas! It actually went very, very well, which shows from the fact that not only did they let me go an hour early, but I also got the highest marks possible, ASS, which is an A for preparation, and two ‘S’ scores for the experiment (S is one above an A). Score breakdown:

    30% 40% 50% 60% 70% 80%
    E D C B A S

However, I also got a C in the latest Math’s test, so it pretty much evens out.

I’ve got other things to tell you about, but they’ll have to wait. I’ve got a party to go to…

PS In the mean time check out the new “Get Updates Via Email” link on the right, its awesome!

    No, Bernie, NO!

I’m thinking that, while university life is cool and all that, you may also be interested in knowing what I’m thinking about in terms of news I’ve heard and songs I’m listening to (for example). I may be wrong, and please, please tell me if I am, but I’m going to give it a go.

So it turns out that F1 boss plans scoring revolution. While this does initially sound like a good idea, will it mean that in the future the championship will be as close as it was this year (when it came down to the last corner!!!)? Will the season be decided several races before the last race? And what about the smaller teams, how will they be differentiated?

I think a better idea would be to give the winner of a race more than 2 points more than 2nd. Maybe they should get 14 points instead of 10? I think something needs to be done, but it shouldn’t sacrifice the battle between the lesser teams.

And for those of you who are interested in what I’ve been up to: Finished my work today, took a long time, but me and Josh got there in the end. Lectures went well, all is good in the world. Just got to get through labs now… Bring on the weekend is all I can say!

    You Found Me

The usual recovering on Saturday happened. The usual trip to Tesco on Sunday and a bit of climbing (well 3.5 hours). A bit of work too.

Had a bit of a tough week so far. I have some work due in on Thursday that is very hard and taking a lot longer than I hoped it would. As a result, it looks like I won’t be able to do any stage crew this week (not very happy about that at all). However, I am still doing OK in lectures, not as good as last week, but not brain-dead yet.

I managed to finish a Programming assignment today, a whole week early, which should free up some time next week. Went climbing for an hour today, managed a hard wall which I’m chuffed about, it was worth taking an hour out of work time to go.

Over the last two days I have been listening to a new song out by The Fray called You Found Me. It’s a fantastic song and I recommend all of you to give 4 minutes to listen to it:

    FOAM!!!

What can I say? I actually enjoyed labs this week. I also understood all of the lectures on Friday, which is a first. Also managed to finish my report due in on Monday.

After labs on Friday I helped Stage Crew with setting up for the foam party. OMG! It was intense! Soo coool! Epic proportions of foam bellow onto the dance floor. I was once again at the lights so I took the liberty of putting sirens on whenever the foam came on. I also used the strobe lights to great effect. It was a great way to end an otherwise good (but worky) week. The music was great, which meant I got some brilliant lighting going on (so much easier when you know the songs). One of my favourite bits of the night was using the strobes to Chelsea Dagger (The Fratellis – who I’m going to see live next month). It was also great because from the lampy booth you can see all the people on the dance floor pushing and shoving to get to the foam. I’ve never seen the dance floor so packed!

The first two pictures show the ‘small’ foam machine. The last picture try’s to show the big one (which is 4 times the size of the small one). So funny to see people disappear under a wave a foam for 20 seconds.

    Foam (1) Foam (2) Foam (3)

Whose ever idea it was to pump thousands of litres of foam onto a packed dance floor full of drunk students deserves a medal!

    Burgers (& More Work)

Circuit theory went well yesterday, continuing my good luck this week. Managed to make another dent in my Coursework yesterday and today.

Josh and I went to Channies (the student’s union bar and restaurant) for dinner, who can say no to a chicken burger?

More work after Channies, then Heroes.

Labs this afternoon, most probably will be agony (as usual) so looking forward to that … being over.

    Work & Moustache

So, Tuesday I stated work on another assignment. Programming labs are always fun on a Tuesday. Maths was fine, so another day of understanding.

In the evening Lauren and I went climbing, managed a few walls that I had failed on before, which is always good. Also managed to do “the chimney” (basically a circular wall in the ceiling) successfully. Very happy with that.

After climbing, ventured over to Comedy Night with Sophie, Lauren, Hugh, Ben, Julie, Ed and Mark. The comedians were very funny as always.

Today, just had Digital Electronics, basically telling what I already know which makes it easier to understand. Next it’s Circuit theory, to avoid being bewildered I’ve just done some re-cap of last weeks stuff, hopefully I’ll be OK.

This afternoon is Channies for early dinner then me and Josh have a work session before I watch Heroes this evening. All good.

Sorry about the long gap between posts. I'm writing this now so that later when I meet everyone and they say "you haven't posted on your blog since tuesday" I can say "you mean, you haven't read the lastest one?" So there you go.

Anyway. My week. Yes. It's been alright. Me and Josh went swimming on Wednesday, what can I say, I'm sure your all familiar with the whole swimming thing.

Maths test on Thursday was very depressing. I had done plenty of revision, but certain elements of the test just proved to be awkward. Good to see Maths tests returning to what they used to be, painful!

Also on Thursday I had a test in Labs, however that went a bit better as it was very easy. So overall a balanced day at the very least.

Friday. This week our Programming lectures were rejigged so both were on Friday. That was good news for me and I'm finding the programming very interesting at the moment, and this week was no exception. Friday afternoon labs were learning how to use a pillar drill. I thought this would be a fun excercise that I had been looking forward to. It turns out it wasn't as much fun as I had hoped.

That brings us to Friday night. Helped Stage Crew in Rubix for the Austin Powered themed night. That was good fun, especially seeing the actual Mini Me from the movies!

Saturday I managed to get a bit more sleep than I wanted, resulting in me being an hour late getting into London to watch the new James Bond with an old school friend.

In the evening I was treated to Pizza Express with Mum, Dad, James, Eileen, Victoria and Sarah. Always great to catch up. Needless to say that lots of Heroes and James Bond was discussed.

Anyway got to go, your all arriving...

    Lasagne

On Monday I managed to make my very first lasagne with the help of Becky:

    Lasagne (1)

    MMMM… Tasty.

    Lasagne (2)

    My first portion!

Enough there to last me about 3 days, so I’ve had Lasagne the last 2 days.

Apart from the lasagne, I went climbing today. The usual fun and enjoyment ensued.

The lectures are starting to get harder, the 2 I had on Monday morning were very difficult. If anyone knows anything about charges in electric and magnetic fields, I’m all ears. As for Effective Isotropic Radiated Power and the Friis Free-Space formula, your guess is as good as mine.

What’s That Coming Over The Hill?

Another good week has come to an end. Plenty of work this week, but managed to have a good week none the less. On Friday me, Mariana, Lauren and Hugh went to the fireworks display the uni held. Good fun, especially the long queue for the burger van!

On Saturday I spent the whole day with stage crew setting up for The Automatic gig that night. I ended up persuading them to let me do video for the gig. Me and Ed set up cameras and plasmas and managed to do live mixing between us. One of us was in the pit with the video camera, while the other mixed the video out live to the screens around the venue. It was fantastic fun and great experience to do the whole thing from start to finish. Now I know how to do it well enough that I could comfortably volunteer to do video for the next big gig.

Today I slept. Had a house visit to Tesco and tried to steal a trolley (we failed!)

    Trolley (2)

    Coming up this week:

    1. Monday – Lasagne
    2. Tuesday – Climbing
    3. Wednesday – Swimming
    4. Thursday – Maths Test
    5. Friday – Gig in Rubix
    6. Saturday – In London
    7. Sunday – Parish Outing

    Fire and Laughs

Having a good week so far. Last night I attempted to grill sausages. I say attempted because there were flames. Don’t worry mum, I’m not injured (nor is anyone else for that matter), just a small fire. All was well, except the sausages and the grill which then had to be safety checked before we could use it again.

After the minor fire, went out to comedy night and had a great laugh. Love comedy night.

Sorry this is a bit short and probably not any good, but its 1am and I want to sleep.

    What’s Happened?

OK, so I understand that its been a while since I actually sat down and wrote something proper. Here goes.

Thursday was a good day, I went to a climbing shop nearby with some other people from the climbing club. I bought climbing shoes, a harness, chalk bag, chalk, belay device and karabina. It was a cool trip, finally I have my own shoes and harness to go climbing in!

Friday we left for the Peak District to start the climbing fresher’s trip. Got to camp at about 1:30am and went to sleep.

Saturday we went to a crag and did some rock climbing!

    Climbing (1)

The tent about 25 of us slept in.

    Climbing (2)

    The crag.

    Climbing (3)

    Doing some climbing.

    Climbing (4)

    The weather wasn’t so bad.

    Climbing (5)

    Almost there…

    Climbing (6)

Caught between a rock and a hard place.

    Climbing (7)

Went for a walk and chased some sheep.

    Climbing (9)

    Going down.

On Sunday we went to an indoor climbing centre and climbed for 4 hours straight. Really great fun.

Today, Monday, I handed in some coursework and have been getting back into the swing of things.

    This week’s roundup:

    Tuesday – Comedy Night

    Wednesday – Climbing (yay!)

Saturday – Big gig in the union!

    Quickie

This is going to be a short post as I am very busy this week. So far everything is going great, got an assignment on Monday which is due in next Monday which has been messing up my plans a little, but nothing I’m not on top of. Its not difficult either so its just finding the time to do it.

Other than that, I did the usual climbing yesterday, really great fun. Still need to work on my endurance though as after climbing for 2 hours my hands want to fall off. Looking forward to the big trip this weekend!

Becky came over today, cannot say how great it was to catch up, shame she couldn’t stay longer!

Anyway, got to get some sleep before the haunt of Labs tomorrow!

  • Workload: 8/10
  • Last meal: Stew (thanks mum, tasted really awesome!)
  • Thought for the day: More Band-Pass Filters & Op-Amps again!

    Thorpe Park and Sleep

That pretty much sums up my weekend. Thorpe Park on Saturday was great fun. I love Fright Nights at the best of times, but Saturday just seemed really good. I can’t put my finger on exactly why, suppose we managed to go on all the rides we wanted to, the queues weren’t as bad as I thought they would be, and we got to see two Stealth rollbacks! (I know I’ve lost all of you on that last point, but it had to be said!)

As for Sunday, I got some work done and managed to catch up on some sleep.

This week is set to be a busy one. I have the usual climbing session in the gym on Tuesday. My sister is coming to see me on Wednesday (YAY!). Trip to a local climbing shop on Thursday with the climbing club to buy harnesses, shoes and other climbing gear. Then at the weekend I’m off to Hope in the Peak District with the climbing club (I know, a lot of climbing!) for a weekend on the rocks!

Looking forward to all of that, but it does mean I have little time to do work. Luckily I’m fairly on top of it all at the moment, so it shouldn’t be an issue.

  • Happiness: 6/10
  • Workload: 7/10
  • Last meal: Cereal for breakfast

    NOT AND OR

Logic gates were the subject of choice for this week’s labs. Luckily, not only do I completely understand logic gates, but I quite enjoy using them and solving the circuits. So this weeks labs were fun and the 6 hours flew by.

As for the other lectures, its Analogue Electronics that’s letting the team down, other than that, all is well. I got 27.5/30 in my Maths test, just a few trigonometry bits that I usually rely on a calculator for that were the problem.

Nothing much else this week, I’ve really been trying to get a lot of work done in the evenings, but still it keeps coming in. Got another assignment this week, so now I’m down to 3 assignments and 5 worksheets to do. Lots to do.

Thorpe Park on Saturday will be great fun, can’t wait!

  • Last meal: Chicken Kiev, chips and beans (and ice cream for dessert)

    FIRE!

Last night I helped turn Rubix into a Laser Quest venue. We had smoke machines, strobes, lost of lights and obstacles such as barrels and a golf buggy.

    Image000

It was absolutely fantastic fun watching people playing while I was operating the lights. In between games we would check the smoke machines were working and make any tweaks to the layout.

The last game was the Stage Crew game. Obviously we thought it would great if we put all the smoke machines on full. A long story short, we set the fire alarm off! But, that’s ok because by that time we’d already set the fire alarm off over 30 times that night.

Once we got back in and turned on the house lights, I took some photos.

    Image002

    This is the dance floor.

    Image003

This is the balcony. Bear in mind this is with the strobes now off and the house lights on. During the game, I couldn’t see more than 3 feet in front of me.

    Image004

Each time the fire alarm goes off, it prints the alarm information onto a piece of paper. This is said piece of paper, and yes, all that on the counter as well. By this time, the alarm was still being set off.

    Good times.

    Back to Work

So after a weekend of Stage Crew and the Grand Prix, it was back to work today. Nothing says welcome back like 5 hours of lectures. They were actually all fairly straight-forward and nothing much to worry about in terms of adding to the workload either.

I hear that there are plans for a so called “Parish Outing” in the near future where you can come down for the Cathedral Service and have a look around my new home too. The latest I’ve heard is the 16th November, but talk to Mum for the details.

    Sleep? Pah!

You don’t wanna know, but basically I had a great last night. We stayed in with a few of my room-mates and few others. Then today I’ve helped with stage crew for the afternoon, helping to set up for a big gig on Sunday night.

    Bad Day, or was it?

0000 – Decide to get some sleep as it has been a long day and want to be awake and ready for my 6 hours of lectures on Friday.

0030 – My wonderful room-mate Mariana decides to have a loud conversation on the phone in Portuguese, whatever she was saying, her laughter made it hard to get any sleep.

0740 – A full 20 minutes before I wanted to get up, but here I am. I suppose I must’ve got to sleep after all. But why am I awake. Oh, its just that constant piercing sound of the fire alarm. OK then, dressing gown on, shoes on, don’t forget your keys. Plod, plod, plod. “What room are you in?”, so I say my address. Plod, plod, plod, Sit. AAAH. The assembly point for this drill was the court common room. If I wasn’t so tired then I probably would’ve thought that it was a nice room and the seats very very cozy, as I’d never been in there before. As it was I quickly realized that I'd said the wrong address. Feeling more the fool, I went and corrected my error.

    0750 – Back to sleep.

    0800 – Rise and shine.

0900 – First lecture, signals and communications. I have no idea what this guy is saying or if I should even be worried that I don’t know what he’s saying. Luckily I have a copy of the notes, so I can hope he’s referring to them as they are pretty easy to understand.

1000 – Still half asleep into the second lecture: Analogue Electronics.

1100 – Now pretty much dead from the overload of information, Again, those notes will come in handy.

1130 – Time for a snack before my next lecture.

1200 – Engineering Mechanics. Either I’m not getting something or this lecture is so easy, a 2-year-old could do it. I don’t know what I prefer: Understanding nothing and worrying you’re an idiot, or understanding everything and worrying your you’re an idiot.

1300 – Finally, lunch time. Bramble Jelly on toast, my favorite! Only 3 hours of labs to go. Unfortunately given yesterdays series of events, the next three hours are not going to be over fast enough.

(Aside: Labs are basically a torture device comprised of 30 students locked in a room with electrical equipment, components and vague instructions. They then have to follow the instructions to completion and without fault, making notes and drawing diagrams and graphs, before the end of the session.)

1400 – WOO! HOO! LAB time! I start by redoing all of the work I did yesterday.

1430 – WOW! That really didn’t take as long as I thought it would. OK, now to check if it works. AHH. Better, but still not right. Whatever could be the problem………………………. Nope its none of those 17 million things I’ve just tried.

1630 – Maybe… Ahh, yes! Eureka! Right, now for the other 2/3 of the experiment.

1635 - “It looks like you’ve finally got that bit working, if you can get all the rest assembled and working by 5pm, I’ll be able to give you a good mark”

1700 - “Time to go”. Not now! I’m on a roll! Solder, component, solder, component… Why do metal detectors need so many parts!

1725 – Beep, Beep, BEEEEEP! YES!!! It works!!! That’ll be an A+ please. Thank you very much. *Skips Home*

    Ice Ice Baby

Yesterday I went Ice Skating with Josh, how else would I have got this photo:

    Ice Skating

Everything is fine at the moment, lectures yesterday went well and I hope that the Maths test went well this morning. Struggled a little, but shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Labs this afternoon were terrible. I assembled a circuit only to find it not working. Now tomorrow I’ll have to rebuild the whole thing from scratch. I’m enjoying it but it’s very annoying when even the demonstrator can’t get your circuit to work. Its not my fault, honest!

Having another quiet night in tonight and tomorrow in time for the busy weekend. More about that another time.

PS: If you’re reading this, don’t forget you can add comments at the end of any post just by clicking the word ‘comments’ and leaving your feedback. It would be great to hear from more people!

The Proof Is In The Pudding

Ah, Ha! The last thing I ate was the other half of a potato bake that I made yesterday, so there! I don’t just eat cereal.

You can see my fabulous ice-cream making skills are improving nicely, vital stuff for any student to know about.

    Dorm Sweet Dorm

Back to university life. It was a cool weekend, really enjoyed seeing everyone again. It was quite weird, because it felt like I hadn’t left, but at the same time I knew I had left. That probably doesn’t make any sense, but I understand. Shame about the Grand Prix, but apart from that the parties were fun.

I’m in the Launderette at the moment, waiting for the wash to finish.

    Home Sweet Home

This weekend i'm back in London. Why? Diggnation of course. Now that probably doesn't make any sense to any of you so let me explain. As part of my daily life I watch several technology shows online: CNET, Tekzilla, Click, WinSuperSite, All About Microsoft and ... Diggnation. Diggnation is a weekly technologty show where two guys, Kevin and Alex, talk about news stories from the past week. The show is filmed in America, and they occasionaly do live shows where they film the show infrom of an audience. Last night, the show was filmed in London! So I was there.

I know that's a really bad picture, but that's all I got.I had a really great time and and enjoyerd it loads.

Since I was 'in town' I thought "why not go and visit all those people I used to know, like my parents. So here I am. For 1 night only.

Tonight I'm going to the Servers Party in church (hope to see a few of you there!) and then tomorrow I'm off, but this time to Birmingham for my Auntie's Birthday Party. So three parties in three days, who can complain.

    • Happiness: 7/10
    • Workload: 5/10
    • Last meal: Cereal (honestly I do eat other things as well!)
    • Thought for the day: DIGGNATION!!

    Thursday Ramblings

So the sink was finally fixed Tuesday afternoon. Finally, I can live without being surrounded by dirty pots.

The way my timetable works is that I basically have a few lectures on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and then pay for it on Thursday and Friday. Here’s the breakdown:

    • Monday: 5 hours
    • Tuesday: 3 hours
    • Wednesday: 3 hours
    • Thursday: 5 hours
    • Friday: 7 hours

The worst part is this wonderful thing called LABS. They’re a total of 6 hours a week, 3 on Thursday and 3 on Friday. LABS ARE THE BANE OF MY EXISTENCE! They are frustrating and long and boring.

But, I can’t really complain because everything else is going really well (mostly).

As for Stage Crew, I helped out with Comedy Night (once again, very hilarious, and this time I got in FREE!) and a gig at Rubix last night called Score.

Score is essentially a themed DJ night for sports teams to celebrate their results from the last week of games. I use the word ‘theme’ in the lightest sense. It has a banner and an inflatable. However, the night was very enjoyable, I ended up on the disco lights again, when will they ever get boring to use?

Score did, however, mean a late night last night, getting sleep between 3:30am and 11am. I had to get up at 11am for a lecture at 12pm, so it only figures that the lecturer would turn up 30 minutes late.

I also went climbing yesterday, its still as fun as ever and this time I’m not aching for days afterwards.

Anyway, can’t sit here all the ruddy day, got some food to eat!

  • Happiness: 7/10
  • Workload: 5/10
  • Last meal: Cereal and grapes for breakfast/lunch
  • Thought for the day: Bring on the Japanese GP!

    The Sink Saga

When you put hot fat down a sink pipe, the chances are that the sink pipe will not be too happy about it. Unfortunately, Sophie, one of my housemates, was unaware of this phenomenon. Since Friday evening we have been without the necessary functions of a sink. Washing has been piling up and up, until yesterday when I had to resort to using the sink upstairs to wash enough pots to make a curry.

    • Workload: 5/10
    • Last meal: Cereal for breakfast
    • Thought for the day: FIX MY SINK… please ;-)

    The day of rest

    AAAHHHHHH…

A good night’s sleep and a relaxing day is exactly what I needed. I’ve done my shopping and had a brief look over the last weeks notes and now I’m ready to face Monday!

    And Breath Out...

Sorry about the lack of a post yesterday, but it has been a very, vey busy few days.
I started a key part of my course on Thursday afternoon. They are called LABS and I ahve them for 3 hours on a thursday and another 3 on a friday. Each week we are given an experiment to try and we have to do prep, keep logs, perform the experiment, write up, conclude and comment for each experiment. The first two (ie this week and next week) are just an introduction to using the equipment and the process of labs. So far labs is by far the most difficult thing I've had to do, so I need to make sure I do plenty of prep for each week's labs to avoid being left behind.
The other big thing to happen over the last two days has been stage crew. I said that I had joined up and I helped out with my first gig on friday. I helped set up the venue: lighting, sound desk and inflatable decorations as well as learning some of the technical jargon and where things are kept. When the gig started I ran the lights on the disco floor for the whole night. Basically, Rubix (the venue) has 20 or so sets of lights for the dance floor to create a clud/disco atmosphere. I ran the lights, meaning I flicked them on and off, changed colours, movements, ect. using a big deck. It was the most fun i've had in a long time. Being able to choose the right lights and effects for a particular track or chorus was great. It was also great fun when I got oppurtunities to use the strobe lighting to fit in with the music. When I used the strobes, I blacked-out the rest of the lights to give a much cooler effect.
I spent from 10pm to 3am on the lighting desk. Time went so fast because it was just so much fun. At 3am the venue closed and I helped pack down, which involves putting everything away.
Then today Stage Crew had a training day. We had lots of Health & Safety talks and introductions to the equipment. The way Stage Crew works is we meet up every monday for everyone to put their names down for gigs happening that week and also to dicuss any thing that everyone needs to know. Stage Crew don't get paid, but they do get free entry into Rubix (the union nightclub) for any gig, not just ones your helping out with. Obviously you have to remain an active member or you will be taken off the team. I won't get my permanent Stage Crew card until christmas, to ensure that I stick around that long, but I won't be going anywhere anytime soon, there's just so much to learn and do. Until christmas I've got a temporary card.
So, to summize: Lectures getting a bit harder (well LABS are). Stage Crew is fantastic. Felling good. Busy. Tired.

Clubs (and not the kind you use on baby seals)

Over the past three days I have gone along to several clubs and societies to get involved and find out if they were for me.

GU2 Radio: I first looked at joining the campus radio on the technical side of operations. I went to a meeting last week and it looked interesting. I'm still considering it, but I'm not sure how I'm going to juggle everything yet.

Stage Crew: The Stage Crew meeting on Monday was very good and I am definitely going to join them. I will get to help out on the technical side of union events and can do anything from 1 to 10 events in a week depending on how I can cope. I am helping out this Friday with a setup for Rubix in the evening. There is a full training day on Saturday, so I will find out a lot more then (and get a free lunch!)

Climbing: Surrey has a very exciting climbing wall and other climbing facilities in (and around) the gym. I went along to the open session on Tuesday and absolutely loved it! It was great fun, but very tiring. This is the other club I am definitely joining.

Badminton: Just after climbing I went to Badminton. It was busy, but as expected. I don't think I will be joining though because I will be able to book courts and then play in my own time, which will be much more convenient.

Canoeing: This was a bit of a wild card. I only chose it because I'd never been canoeing before and I wanted to give it a go. We went for a little trip down the canal and back again. I really enjoyed it, but the problem is that it takes up a lot of time to get there and then it is a 4-5 hour commitment, which is a bit much to ask every week. (I know I will probably do that much with stage crew, but that can be scheduled for any day, whereas canoeing cannot.

So I'll probably end up doing Climbing and Stage Crew, very different but definitely the most enjoyable two of the lot.

As for lectures, they're going fine and are so far very straight-forward. Got a 10am start tomorrow, so can afford a bit of a lie-in. Catch up with you all soon.

The Curious Incident of the Custom Timetable

Last week when I got my timetable, it looked very crowded and busy. It turned out that there were lots of lectures listed that I didn't have to attend because I was in a different group or in the higher maths set. Additionally, not every lecture happens every week, and every week the room, academic or time of the lecture could change. The result was a very confusing timetable.
So I thought it would be a good idea to download the timetable from the Engineering page and edit it so it only had the lectures I had. The result was a timetable half the size that was a lot easier to read.
Last night, after a hard morning of lectures and an afternoon of catching up on things, I realised that I had actually missed a lecture. The reason for this was that I had forgot ot put this particular lecture, on Engineering Design, on my 'Custom Timetable'. Therefore, as far as I was concerned, I didn't have it. So I was faced with the fact that, on my first day, I had missed a lecture already.
But, luckily the lecture was repeated today at 1pm. It had the same name, room and lecturer so I assumed it would be the same one. So all I had to do was go along to this lecture instead. Sorted.
When I get there, the lecturer said that the lecture was optional and that today we would be leaning the basics of using Word. She then proceeded to direct us all to an online tutorial on how to use Word. The tutorial starte with "this is an icon, this is the taskbar, this is the start button, ..."
Needless to say I didn't stick around. Not only was the lecture optional and very, very basic. But the whole lecture was going through online tutorials that I could choose to complete in my own time, if at all.
Looks like I chose a good lecture to miss!

    Coulombs, Safety, C and WIRES

My first day of lectures has gone very well. I had a lecture this mornign introducing me to the electronics course. The first topic is resistance. I will get some questions to answer at some point by e-mail, but for now I just have to try and understand my notes!
The other two lectues were a lot easier to understand. One was essentially a health and safety lecture and the other was an intorduction to the programming course which i'm really looking forward to.
This afternoon I did some laundry, which was an experience. The laundrette was quite busy and then the whole "what do I do" fiasco. But I got there in the end and my clothes aren't ruined so that's a bonus.
In the evening I went to a meeting about joining the Stage Crew Society who basically orgainise all the technical side of all the union events. They cover sound, lighting and video. I'm going to be helping out and learning how they do everything. Very excited about all of that!
So all is well, just had a nice stir fry, so still eating and alive. Bring on the FUTURE!

    My First Full Weekend

    Saturday
Went to river sports day. It was an event held down by the river in town where teams competed in several events including canoeing, tug of war and water gladiators. You can see one of the canoe races in the first picture.
In the evening, we had a big game of Monopoly in the kitchen, see picture 2. Needless to say it went on for about 3 hours before we gave up and went to bed.
    Sunday
Went to Tesco in the morning for my weekly shop. Then made a cheesecake. Watched the Grand Prix. James came over and we had lunch in the Chancellors, the union bar. Showed him round the campus and intorduced him to a few people. Once James left, I got myself ready for the start of my lectures tomorrow and ate some cheesecake.
    Tomorrow
Lectures start at 9am and finish at 1pm. Will be interesting to see the format and how much work i'm given. I'm excited about it, but also know it will be the start of a lot of hard work.

    Friday

Yesterday was a good day to catch up on sleep. I got up at 11am and went swimming at the Guildford Spectrum with Josh. It was good fun. Next time I'll have to go ice skating there. The rest of the day I spent relaxing.
In the evening I went out with a dozen other people to School Disco at Rubix. Queued for an hour and a half to get in but then had a really good night dancing and watching someone get gunged.
Today I'm going down to the river to watch river sports day. Will be fun to watch people get wet and make a fool of themselves!

    Day 5

Today I had my BIG introduction to my course. Basically, there is a common first year, so I can swap if I want to at the end of the year to another Electronic Engineering course.

I'm in the higher group for maths, which means I have about 2.5 hours less lectures a week in maths!

The rest of the day I had various things, tour of the media labs which were very exciting.

This evening I went out to Open Mic Night at Chancellors bar. It was a good night. I'll admit now that I did have my first sip of alcohol tonight, a Smirnoff Ice and a Snake Bite.

Tomorrow I have a free day, so me and Josh are going swimming at the Guildford Spectrum. Should also get my loan money tomorrow.

Sorry if this post is not readable, its 1am and i've had a bit to drink.

The picture above is of Josh filling out a form in a lecture we had today.
