We Are Family

Where was I… I’ve completely lost my train of thought. Either way, its great to see my sis again!

Friday evening we had a good night in. Watched some Jeff Dunham and the 198th episode of “Never Mind the Buzzcocks”.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Speak to you soon (except you Bex, I’ll speak to you now!)

T’ North

Wey Hey! The weekend is upon us. And that means seeing my Sister!

Thursday I had another night in, watching Heroes. Yesterday I had the 4 epic hours of lectures in the morning, not that great but could have been a lot worse. No surprises there.

In the afternoon it was time for the last lab session before Christmas! It actually went very, very well, which shows from the fact that not only did they let me go an hour early, but I also got the highest marks possible, ASS, which is an A for preparation, and two ‘S’ scores for the experiment (S is one above an A). Score breakdown:

30% 40% 50% 60% 70% 80%
E D C B A S

However, I also got a C in the latest Math’s test, so it pretty much evens out.

I’ve got other things to tell you about, but they’ll have to wait. I’ve got a party to go to…

PS In the mean time check out the new “Get Updates Via Email” link on the right, its awesome!

Who said it wouldn’t be on time…

Since the enormous success of Team GB at the Beijing Olympics this year I’ve been following progress on the London Olympic Park. Its really coming along and today they released a new set of aerial photographs. Check them out.

    No, Bernie, NO!

I’m thinking that, while university life is cool and all that, you may also be interested in knowing what I’m thinking about in terms of news I’ve heard and songs I’m listening to (for example). I may be wrong, and please, please tell me if I am, but I’m going to give it a go.

So it turns out that F1 boss plans scoring revolution. While this does initially sound like a good idea, will it mean that in the future the championship will be as close as it was this year (when it came down to the last corner!!!)? Will the season be decided several races before the last race? And what about the smaller teams, how will they be differentiated?

I think a better idea would be to give the winner of a race more than 2 points more than 2nd. Maybe they should get 14 points instead of 10? I think something needs to be done, but it shouldn’t sacrifice the battle between the lesser teams.

And for those of you who are interested in what I’ve been up to: Finished my work today, took a long time, but me and Josh got there in the end. Lectures went well, all is good in the world. Just got to get through labs now… Bring on the weekend is all I can say!

    You Found Me

The usual recovering on Saturday happened. The usual trip to Tesco on Sunday and a bit of climbing (well 3.5 hours). A bit of work too.

Had a bit of a tough week so far. I have some work due in on Thursday that is very hard and taking a lot longer than I hoped it would. As a result, it looks like I won’t be able to do any stage crew this week (not very happy about that at all). However, I am still doing OK in lectures, not as good as last week, but not brain-dead yet.

I managed to finish a Programming assignment today, a whole week early, which should free up some time next week. Went climbing for an hour today, managed a hard wall which I’m chuffed about, it was worth taking an hour out of work time to go.

Over the last two days I have been listening to a new song out by The Fray called You Found Me. It’s a fantastic song and I recommend all of you to give 4 minutes to listen to it:

Tell me what you think in the comments.

    FOAM!!!

What can I say? I actually enjoyed labs this week. I also understood all of the lectures on Friday, which is a first. Also managed to finish my report due in on Monday.

After labs on Friday I helped Stage Crew with setting up for the foam party. OMG! It was intense! Soo coool! Epic proportions of foam bellow onto the dance floor. I was once again at the lights so I took the liberty of putting sirens on whenever the foam came on. I also used the strobe lights to great effect. It was a great way to end an otherwise good (but worky) week. The music was great, which meant I got some brilliant lighting going on (so much easier when you know the songs). One of my favourite bits of the night was using the strobes to Chelsea Dagger (The Fratellis – who I’m going to see live next month). It was also great because from the lampy booth you can see all the people on the dance floor pushing and shoving to get to the foam. I’ve never seen the dance floor so packed!

The first two pictures show the ‘small’ foam machine. The last picture try’s to show the big one (which is 4 times the size of the small one). So funny to see people disappear under a wave a foam for 20 seconds.

    Foam (1) Foam (2) Foam (3)

Whose ever idea it was to pump thousands of litres of foam onto a packed dance floor full of drunk students deserves a medal!

    Burgers (& More Work)

Circuit theory went well yesterday, continuing my good luck this week. Managed to make another dent in my Coursework yesterday and today.

Josh and I went to Channies (the student’s union bar and restaurant) for dinner, who can say no to a chicken burger?

More work after Channies, then Heroes.

Labs this afternoon, most probably will be agony (as usual) so looking forward to that … being over.

  • Workload: 7/10
  • Last meal: Spaghetti Hoops on Toast (now there’s a student lunch!)

    Work & Moustache

So, Tuesday I stated work on another assignment. Programming labs are always fun on a Tuesday. Maths was fine, so another day of understanding.

In the evening Lauren and I went climbing, managed a few walls that I had failed on before, which is always good. Also managed to do “the chimney” (basically a circular wall in the ceiling) successfully. Very happy with that.

After climbing, ventured over to Comedy Night with Sophie, Lauren, Hugh, Ben, Julie, Ed and Mark. The comedians were very funny as always.

Today, just had Digital Electronics, basically telling what I already know which makes it easier to understand. Next it’s Circuit theory, to avoid being bewildered I’ve just done some re-cap of last weeks stuff, hopefully I’ll be OK.

This afternoon is Channies for early dinner then me and Josh have a work session before I watch Heroes this evening. All good.

    Lovely Monday

Had a good day today. Actually understood most of my lectures this morning, which is a bonus. Got plenty of work done, but never fear, still loads more to do…

Quiet night in doing work and watching Top Gear and Stephen Fry in America. All in all, a very lovely day. Long may it continue…

    Them that I know

What a fun afternoon. Can I just say a quick thank you to all of you for making the effort to visit me today. I had a great time (despite the condoms and mugs!) especially the wonderful meal, thanks mum!

    Cathedral (1) Cathedral (2)

Unfortunately, they didn’t come out very well. But still, good to see everyone together.

    This week:

    1. Tuesday – Climbing & Comedy Night
    2. Friday – Foam Party!
  • Happiness: 7/10
  • Workload: 7/10
  • Last meal: Massive meal (I think it was 5 courses in the end)
  • Thought for the day: 83,000 convicts in prisons (I was listening!)
  • London Calling

Sorry about the long gap between posts. I'm writing this now so that later when I meet everyone and they say "you haven't posted on your blog since tuesday" I can say "you mean, you haven't read the lastest one?" So there you go.

Anyway. My week. Yes. It's been alright. Me and Josh went swimming on Wednesday, what can I say, I'm sure your all familiar with the whole swimming thing.

Maths test on Thursday was very depressing. I had done plenty of revision, but certain elements of the test just proved to be awkward. Good to see Maths tests returning to what they used to be, painful!

Also on Thursday I had a test in Labs, however that went a bit better as it was very easy. So overall a balanced day at the very least.

Friday. This week our Programming lectures were rejigged so both were on Friday. That was good news for me and I'm finding the programming very interesting at the moment, and this week was no exception. Friday afternoon labs were learning how to use a pillar drill. I thought this would be a fun excercise that I had been looking forward to. It turns out it wasn't as much fun as I had hoped.

That brings us to Friday night. Helped Stage Crew in Rubix for the Austin Powered themed night. That was good fun, especially seeing the actual Mini Me from the movies!

Saturday I managed to get a bit more sleep than I wanted, resulting in me being an hour late getting into London to watch the new James Bond with an old school friend.

In the evening I was treated to Pizza Express with Mum, Dad, James, Eileen, Victoria and Sarah. Always great to catch up. Needless to say that lots of Heroes and James Bond was discussed.

Anyway got to go, your all arriving...

    Lasagne

On Monday I managed to make my very first lasagne with the help of Becky:

    Lasagne (1)

    MMMM… Tasty.

    Lasagne (2)

    My first portion!

Enough there to last me about 3 days, so I’ve had Lasagne the last 2 days.

Apart from the lasagne, I went climbing today. The usual fun and enjoyment ensued.

The lectures are starting to get harder, the 2 I had on Monday morning were very difficult. If anyone knows anything about charges in electric and magnetic fields, I’m all ears. As for Effective Isotropic Radiated Power and the Friis Free-Space formula, your guess is as good as mine.

  • Happiness: 7/10
  • Workload: 6/10
  • Last meal: Lasagne! (weren’t you paying attention)
  • Thought for the day: Hoping for a straight-forward maths test on Thursday (famous last words…)

What’s That Coming Over The Hill?

Another good week has come to an end. Plenty of work this week, but managed to have a good week none the less. On Friday me, Mariana, Lauren and Hugh went to the fireworks display the uni held. Good fun, especially the long queue for the burger van!

On Saturday I spent the whole day with stage crew setting up for The Automatic gig that night. I ended up persuading them to let me do video for the gig. Me and Ed set up cameras and plasmas and managed to do live mixing between us. One of us was in the pit with the video camera, while the other mixed the video out live to the screens around the venue. It was fantastic fun and great experience to do the whole thing from start to finish. Now I know how to do it well enough that I could comfortably volunteer to do video for the next big gig.

Today I slept. Had a house visit to Tesco and tried to steal a trolley (we failed!)

    Trolley (2)

    Coming up this week:

    1. Monday – Lasagne
    2. Tuesday – Climbing
    3. Wednesday – Swimming
    4. Thursday – Maths Test
    5. Friday – Gig in Rubix
    6. Saturday – In London
    7. Sunday – Parish Outing

If you want to visit Mum is organising a trip on Sunday, email her for details (because I have no idea what’s going on!)

  • Happiness: 7/10
  • Workload: 6/10
  • Last meal: Spag Bol
  • Thought for the day: Don’t try to steal trolley’s from Tesco’s!

    Fire and Laughs

Having a good week so far. Last night I attempted to grill sausages. I say attempted because there were flames. Don’t worry mum, I’m not injured (nor is anyone else for that matter), just a small fire. All was well, except the sausages and the grill which then had to be safety checked before we could use it again.

After the minor fire, went out to comedy night and had a great laugh. Love comedy night.

Sorry this is a bit short and probably not any good, but its 1am and I want to sleep.

    What’s Happened?

OK, so I understand that its been a while since I actually sat down and wrote something proper. Here goes.

Thursday was a good day, I went to a climbing shop nearby with some other people from the climbing club. I bought climbing shoes, a harness, chalk bag, chalk, belay device and karabina. It was a cool trip, finally I have my own shoes and harness to go climbing in!

Friday we left for the Peak District to start the climbing fresher’s trip. Got to camp at about 1:30am and went to sleep.

Saturday we went to a crag and did some rock climbing!

    Climbing (1)

The tent about 25 of us slept in.

    Climbing (2)

    The crag.

    Climbing (3)

    Doing some climbing.

    Climbing (4)

    The weather wasn’t so bad.

    Climbing (5)

    Almost there…

    Climbing (6)

Caught between a rock and a hard place.

    Climbing (7)

Went for a walk and chased some sheep.

    Climbing (9)

    Going down.

On Sunday we went to an indoor climbing centre and climbed for 4 hours straight. Really great fun.

Today, Monday, I handed in some coursework and have been getting back into the swing of things.

    This week’s roundup:

    Tuesday – Comedy Night

    Wednesday – Climbing (yay!)

Saturday – Big gig in the union!
