Acting Debut & The FUTURE!

I’ve been part of the University of Surrey’s Student Television Station since it began a few years ago, but I’ve always focused on the technical aspects such as filming and editing… but this week, in a bizarre role-reversal between Mike and I, I presented and he edited. So I present to you my first (who knows their may be more…) foray into news presenting…

Charles Gray uncovers plans for the old bookshop to become a strip club after it's refurbishment... or at least it should according to one student. In a MADTV EXCLUSIVE we tell you what is actually to become of our once loved book shop.

In other news, that I haven’t presented to camera, I went to London last weekend and saw some mates from way back when in Sixth form. Brought together with our love for Nando’s free whole chicken, we sat, gobbled and gobbed for hours. It’s always interesting to stay in touch and see what all your old friends have achieved with their lives. Ben, who has already graduated from an Accounting degree, has found himself working in the Pensions department at Wandsworth Council… I wonder where I’ll be in a years time? Back at Sony? Another broadcast company? McDonalds? the street? Like recycling, the possibilities are endless…

But that’s a while away yet, what about the immediate future? Well I’m off to W-hey-mouth this weekend to see the lovely Charlotte :D After that?

  • 4th December. My parents come to Guildford for Christmas dinner cooked by my housemates and I.
  • 15th December. Going to see Matthew Bourne’s Nutcraker in London!
  • 22nd December. The usual trick for Christmas commences… up to my sisters in Chesterfield for the festivities and prevailing jokes.
  • 29th December. The usual trick for New Year… Jake and I hit up London for a ‘small’ party with friends while the parents are away…
  • January. Exams, coursework, projects… back to normality, for my last year at University!!!

Some of you may have heard that I made a new years resolution for 2011 to not buy any chocolate for the whole year, and those people will also know how impossible this challenge should prove to be… well I’m still at it, but the going is getting tough with just 6 weeks to go! I started the year with a chocolate stash (below) to get me through, but this week that stash was depleted to zero. So now, as Boyzone once said, the going gets tough…

She’ll Be Coming Round The Mountain

It’s on it’s way… I’m just a bit pre-occupied with this moving house, travelling around Switzerland and Italy, birthday party, and boating malarkey.

But not to worry, I’m only off to Scotland on Thursday, back off to Switzerland next Monday and then in Sheffield the following weekend… And then I move into my NEW house :)

So, yea, just ambling around…

Fasten Your Seatbelt

Well... Where do I start. I'm still working in Switzerland week-by-week, but that may all come to an end by the close of June as the project progresses without me to the next phase...

I got an extension on my contact at Sony to get me to the middle of August. Then for the last month before I return to my old life, I'm going inter-railing around Europe. The flights are already booked and hostels are being sought as we speak.... It's all very bloomin' exciting!!

Apart from my weekly outings to the hotter clime, I've spent my weekends doing the normal stuff. Two weekends ago I went to good old home for my Dad's birthday party in church. I don't know how much you will know about my affiliation with the local church, but lets just say it goes back to birth when I played the leading role in the nativity as a baby in arms. Since those days I owe a lot to that church and its inhabitants for giving me so many opportunities to take part and, in more ways than I can imagine, get me exactly where I am today.

The coming weeks and months are going to be a bit shit-hot (if you can mind my French):

- A weekend in Italy in 3 weeks time :)
- A weekend in Guildford for the end of university parties
- A weekend on the boat
- A long weekend in Scotland for Julie's 21st Birthday
- A couple weeks living with Viv in Guildford while I'm between houses
- Sheffield for Grandma's 80th
- Moving into my new house, and living with new housemates!!
- Going to grad ball (there is a pre-requisite that i can get a tux.... Dad? :P)
- Then I believe it's Graeme's Garden Party weekend in London if I'm not mistaken...
- And then it's Sophie's 21st BBQ!

Phew! That takes us up to the end of July... I think the next post will have to be a picture post for the last month, because there's just too much to say... Milan for starters!

  • Happiness. 9.5 out of 10
  • Tiredness. 0.5 out of 5
  • Free Time. 2 out of 5
  • Last Meal. Pasta for lunch
  • Song of the day. Martin Solveig - Hello
  • Thought for the day. Surprises are fun :)
  • What I’m Doing Now. Having a mini-battle with uni about my degree…

Raising the Bar of Life

It seems like the last few weeks of good times are set to continue for a while… which leads me to question my definition of “good times”. Is the bar too low??

I love life, I love the small things that make me smile, like a few free chocolates from a certain airline company :P

DSCF4984

I’m very excited about everything happening at work at the moment, especially the next few weeks which are the start of the next phase, bringing more geeky goodies :)

This last weekend was awesome, all of it. From the hours of chilling in Guildford Wetherspoons on Friday, to a fantastic day in London visiting an all you can eat vegan restaurant, Covent Garden shopping (and seeing cousin Beth!), Camden browsing and then a Lifehouse gig at the Roundhouse before going to see my sister in the evening! Such a good day :o)

There’s a lot to look forward too in the next few weeks too:

  • 4th March – Off to Weymouth for the weekend for sea and cider :)
  • 11th March – Jake comes to Guildford! Good times ensue… guaranteed :)
  • 25th March – Amsterdam?! Maybe…
  • 8th April – Another boat trip is on the cards… :)

Let the good times roll on and on!

  • Happiness. 9 out of 10
  • Tiredness. 3 out of 5
  • Free Time. 1 out of 5
  • Last Meal. Chicago Town pizza, back to cooking for myself… for 2 days anyway lol
  • Song of the day. Lifehouse – Falling In
  • Thought for the day. “Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity." — Gilda Radner
  • What I’m Doing Now. Booked the day off on Friday, 3-day weekend win!

You Forgot The Blueberries

Another week has been and gone, but more importantly… so has another weekend!

So far there have been 5 weekends in 2011, and they just seem to be getting better and better!

This last weekend was crazy Cardiff weekend. I went to visit Jake for fun times and that’s exactly what happened. Needless to say lots of Rum was consumed (it deserves a capital letter :P), and lots of catching up was had. Jake’s university halls are pretty damn small, and when I invaded with my Swiss suitcase full of stuff (but not chocolate this time) it did get a bit messy :S

Jake has come to visit me in Guildford a couple of times before, so it was great to finally switch roles. I swear Jake is so lucky with his housemates, they all seem really cool, and we got on straight away. Besides being badly conned in a drinking game designed to stitch me up, all the banter was brilliant :P

On Friday I arrived at about 10pm after quite an epic journey straight from work in Switzerland:

  • I left work at 2pm (1pm GMT)
  • 30 minute drive from the office to the Airport
  • Fly to Zurich airport, arriving at about 4pm
  • Fly from Zurich to London Heathrow (flight delayed by 30 minutes meant we arrived at 6:30pm)
  • Luckily I have perfected the art of wizzing through the airport, and got in the taxi 15 minutes later…
  • The taxi then drove me to Reading train station where I was to get the 7:48pm train…
  • After traffic on the M3, I got there with just 15 minutes to spare
  • Then I got on a very packed train to Cardiff, arriving at 9:30pm
  • At Cardiff Jake was there to greet me!
  • A 30 minute walk to his halls got us there just after 10pm… and then it was time to start the night!

I’m not going to lie, I was pretty shattered, considering I’d also got up at 7am (6am GMT) for work. But once the first drinking game was in full swing, the Friday bug kicked in and kept me going until 4am!

Saturday was a bit more civilised, which just about balances out the weekend nicely. Then on Sunday it was back on the train to Reading, taxi to Heathrow and to Zurich. A total of 27 hours travelling for 31 hours in Cardiff…. and it was worth every minute! Next time it’s Jake’s turn to visit :D

This week I’m back in Switzerland for work,  but already looking forward to next weekend!

  • Happiness. 11 out of 10
  • Tiredness. 5 out of 5 (sleeeeeeppzzzzzzzz)
  • Free Time. 0 out of 5 (but who needs it when you’re having this much fun anyway!)
  • Last Meal. Sausage rolls from Cardiff train station!
  • Song of the day. Joshua Radin – I’d Rather Be With You
  • Thought for the day. Toffee Apple Pie is pretty damn good! Thanks Becky!
  • What I’m Doing Now. In Zurich Airport, sleeping in a dayroom. Walking around a deserted airport is quite creepy…

PS there’ve been a few advancements in the world of Inter-railing and accommodation for my final year, so I’ll update you on those soon

PPS You forgot the blueberries, skip to 55 seconds if you absolutely can’t wait, but it is worth it! Thanks for this one Jake :)

What’s 2011 All About?

This post was written on Tuesday 4th January

2010 was a fantastic year. And as always I’m going to maintain that live is not about where you go, or things you see, but the people and the experiences you have along the way. Every single one of my top 40 moments of last year was great because of people, and that’s what will make 2011 too. But you can’t just sit inside and wait for people to turn up! Here’s the vague plan in my head of how 2011 is shaping up:

  • January. More working in Switzerland
  • February. Going to KoKo club in London to see Mr Scruff, and Becky comes to London
  • March. Giving up chocolate for lent (well, trying). Grand Prix season starts :)
  • April. Seeing The King Blues at KoKo. Another boat trip?
  • May. Nothing yet
  • June. End of tenancy at my current abode
  • July. Contracted to finish at Sony
  • August. Start of Inter-rail trip
  • September. End of inter-rail trip
  • October. Back at university
  • November. Nothing yet
  • December. Christmas (because some things don’t change)

I’ll talk about the inter-rail trip in another post, but that’s the chorus in a nutshell. I’ve never meant what I’m about to say with such passion: “BRING IT ON!”

  • Happiness. 9 out of 10
  • Tiredness. 0 out of 5
  • Free Time. 3 out of 5
  • Last Meal. Chicken Tikka Masala from the pub
  • Song of the day. Ellie Goulding - Your Song
  • Thought for the day. 2010 was good, but 2011 will be better
  • What I’m Doing Now. Looking at the amazing curtains now in my room to block out the noise from the living room next door. Thank you dad!

December: The Best Moment

Well that was the end of the Top 40! But it’s a shame I stopped looking at the top moments of the year on December 22nd. I started writing up my top 40 on the train on the way to my sisters, with the intention of finishing it while I was there. However, having not seen my sister for 5 months, we had too much catching up to do for me to lock myself away typing for hours. Hence the deadline slipped and it’s only just been finished.

Christmas day was amazing, and nothing beats the look on Alastair’s face when he ran into the living room straight passed the Christmas tree only to realise that Santa had come!

DSCF4777

Everything about being at my sisters was just brilliant! We even went to see the Sheffield Steelers play Ice Hockey and win 6-3!!! What a beating!

James and I drove back to London on the 27th… I’ve spent a curious amount of time with my brother in December, without so much as a single argument! Maybe I’m finally growing up :P

James convinced me to straighten my hair “to see what it does”. I was the personification of sceptical about this idea, assuming that hair straighteners were reserved for women and gays, but I take it all back… since I am now the proud owner of a pair (of straighteners, that is!). My god what have I become :S

DSCF4823

And then there was Jake and the New Years Party. The day before, we went shopping on Oxford Street in the sales because we didn’t fear for our lives enough.

The eventual party was a blast! About 20 people came in the end including my friends, Jake’s friends and Beth’s friends. Beth made cupcakes (yummeh) and we had champagne courtesy of yours truly. Party games (AKA drinking games) ensued, including Irish Snap (that will mean something to some of you :P) and my favourite game of the night: “what can we make Jake drink without him questioning it?”, the winner was Matthew’s concoction of dark rum and Jägermeister :D

So to answer the question of the best moment of December, it would have to be the New Years Party! It would definitely have made it to the top 10 if it was in time to be added to the list. However, half of the party was in 2011, so maybe it counts as the first top moment of 2011. Let the new list begin!

Christmas

The girls are putting up the Christmas decorations in the living room and listening to Christmas music… now it feels like Christmas!

Only a few short weeks to go before that fateful day, and this year I’m planning to spend it with my dear sister – continuing the tradition of recent years. But this time it will be slightly different since I haven’t seen my sister since July! That’s 5 months! I’m so used to seeing my sister every month or so that this has actually been quite difficult. I’m really close to my sister, if you hadn’t guessed that by now :D, and I love spending time with her and the rest of the family. That’s what this Christmas is going to be about.

After Christmas the plan is to grab a handful of friends (or 2) and have another new years party… a new tradition started last year that was so awesome that it just has to happen again. The party is also a fab opportunity to spend time with Jake, the infamous cousin. The party this year promises to take it up another notch and it’s just going to be a great end to the year, and start to the next!

Great time at my sister’s, and a quality party with my cousins. The Christmas balance is set! So dust off the decorations, throw on some Christmas tunes, and put that silly hat on…

…Christmas is H-E-R-E!

  • Happiness. 7 out of 10
  • Tiredness. 2 out of 5 (No thanks to a certain Miss Wilkie who set my alarm clock 10 minutes fast this morning!)
  • Free Time. 0 out of 5
  • Last Meal. Chicken and rice!
  • Song of the day. My MP3 player has ran out of battery :(
  • Thought for the day. Ciabatta banter! Cha-ba-ba-da-ba!
  • What I’m Doing Now. Dreaming of a white Christmas… and getting a Christmas hug from Tamsin :) which is pretty much the same as a normal hug… but with a Santa beard :D

Swiss Musings

Note: This post is filled with random pictures, un-associated with the text.

Finally back in Guildford for the weekend after being in Switzerland since Monday. I’ve said this before and I will surely say it again: Sony is an amazing place to work. Since I started working there in July I can safely say that every day I go into work with a smile, looking forward to what it has in store.

DSCF4184

^ Blood Brothers: James came to Guildford a couple weeks ago. It was really great to see him! This will have to happen again!

Working in a large company such as Sony means there is always something to do, and the work I’ve been doing has not only been varied, but also relevant to my degree. In week 3 of placement I was given the opportunity to work on this project that would entail a trip to Switzerland… now that’s not a standard request! While the trip has been postponed several times, it’s finally happening. For me, it’s not so much the fact that I get to go to Switzerland, or the fact that I was asked to go; it’s the realisation that in the last few weeks I have become a part of the project team, not just a tag-along. And it’s that integration and appreciation that I’m most grateful for.

DSCF4195DSCF4199

^ A couple of pictures from the “goodbye” meal I had last weekend before I left for Switzerland.

I’ve realised recently that, as a person, I strive to be part of a team, and for my input to be valued and appreciated. If I can be my own psychiatrist for a minute, I think this all stems from secondary school where I often felt alone. I know, cue the violin, but it’s given me a new perspective on a few things. For example, I never fully felt part of Stage Crew, and because video was always considered an afterthought, I didn’t see my opinions being taken seriously. That’s probably why I don’t do it anymore.

DSCF4220DSCF4279

^ Halloween… ‘nuf said

I don’t know whether it’s a sign of weakness that I only feel motivated when I know someone will appreciate my work, but I do know that I have immense pride in my work (such as videos, websites, reports, etc.) and while I appreciate constructive criticism, I can often take it more personally than intended.

DSCF4354

^ Back in England. Did someone say party? (yes actually. Julie :P)

With MADTV recently, I’ve seen a divide between the committee and the team… And I know that last year’s team certainly felt that sometimes their effort wasn’t appreciated when reports were released late or not given as much promotion and care over as reports that committee were working on, even when it was. And I can see now how we could have communicated better, and I don’t want this years MADTV to go the same way. MADTV has had a brilliant start to the year, and it’s only going to get better and better. I just hope that the success of MADTV doesn’t jeopardise the team’s chance to learn through experimentation and have as much fun as we used to!

  • Happiness. 6 out of 10 (I have my reasons…)
  • Tiredness. 0 out of 5 (Woohoo! Enlightenment!)
  • Free Time. 0 out of 5 (And I don’t care :P)
  • Last Meal. Erm… Cereal :S
  • Song of the day. Duck Sauce - Barbra Streisand
  • Thought for the day. The Earth’s equator is so big that if you laid it out flat, it would circle the Earth approximately one time.
  • What I’m Doing Now. Waiting until Monday, when I can go back to Switzerland :D

I can count to 21!

The last few days have been phenomenal! In fact, the last two months have been crazy and I’m sure you can tell by the fact that I haven’t been writing on this blog much that I’ve been very busy.

Despite all the 21st Birthday celebrations last week (which I assure you I will get round to explaining, with annotations, in a later post) life has kept me busy!

I’ve felt over-whelmed recently by the sheer amount of things I have to do both at home and at work. Work is going amazingly, but sometimes I find it difficult to concentrate because of everything else that is happening. I’m hoping that once university starts everything will find a rhythm, but right now it doesn’t stop.

Anne, Will and Viv have all been staying over the house in the last 2 weeks (coming and going), and it’s been great to see them. I just find that with so many people in the house, so much to think about and so much going on that I am losing my personal space. I’m one of these people, once I arrive home, I need to just sit in my room and think. Perform some mindless task like cooking or washing or Facebook just to relax, for an hour. I don’t mind if I have to rush out somewhere or do something as long as I know about it. I think I’m just struggling with coming home and having so much happening in the house that I feel needs my attention. It’s like work again when all I need is rest.

The last few weeks I’ve found myself getting very few hours sleep and consequently using travelling time between work and home as a perfect time to get an extra 20 minutes kip. Why have I been loosing so much sleep? I’m a worrier. There’s no doubt about it. I worry about everything. And recently there’s been a lot on my mind:

  • Work. I have reports to write and things to research, and I find it hard to switch off.
  • MADTV. Lots of Fresher’s events and programs coming up… but MADTV has also been my saviour as I’ve started working on a new projected (titled REDRUM) that I love spending time on and I’ve been using as a big relief from everything.
  • Friends. One of my friends from home recently died quite suddenly and it was a big shock to the system. It had me in quite a daze for a number of days and it’s only after his memorial last Friday that I’ve started to push it to the back of my mind.
  • House. People staying over, keeping everything tidy, paying bills and fixing things. I rearranged my room at the weekend and I think it’s much better now… pictures coming soon!
  • Logistics. Getting things organised for parties, going to London, a trip to Amsterdam and generally travelling places a lot. Takes a lot of planning. In this regard I got a new phone for my birthday and it’s helped me check train times on the go and keep up to date with emails while travelling so I have more time for other things.

Life is mad. I think when I found out my friend died it was like the last straw and I took a lot of things that were happening around me at the time quite personally. I still feel like I need some time to sort my life out and decide what I’m trying to do. I’ve found since I started placement that I’m a different person, but I don’t know that new person yet.

For example, every Monday I find myself having tuna pasta for dinner. It’s not a planned thing, but every Monday I get home and can’t be bothered to cook. And on more than one occasion I’ve gone straight to bed when I got home (like today).

I’ve had a brilliant time celebrating my birthday, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. I really needed that to relax and enjoy life a little. But I’m also glad it’s over so I can focus on getting into a routine. I’ve been working at Sony for 12 weeks now, it’s about time I figured out how to live the life I need to with Sony at the centre, rather than still having a full life as if I was still only have 20 hours of lectures a week. I don’t get to choose when I work anymore, and I have to get used to it! Something I didn’t realise would be this challenging and certainly not something I thought I’d struggle with.

Until next time… Charles x

  • Happiness. 6 out of 10
  • Tiredness. 4 out of 5
  • Free Time. -1 out of 5
  • Last Meal. Peperoni pizza (not tuna pasta, couldn’t even be bothered to cook that today!)
  • Song of the day. Newton Faulkner – Dream Catch Me
  • Thought for the day. I have been a fool
  • What I’m Doing Now. Really wanting to go to bed, but glad to have that off my chest :)

July: The Best Moment

July! What a month! My first four weeks at Sony, starting climbing again, settling into the house and family.

Looking back at July, it’s the days I spent with family that really stand out. Going home for an evening after being at the Emirates stadium all day, and seeing my parents, Victoria and Beth. I really enjoyed that evening, shame they can’t happen more often!

And it’s family that scores the douze points for July. Grandad’s 80th was such a good day (and night!). Admittedly it was mainly seeing Jake and Sam and being able to get this photo:

image

It was also great to see my sister again. I love my sister so much and can’t wait until she moves to Guildford and I can see her every day (a boy can dream…)

The evening also held some good times. Jake and I tackled the alcohol collection full on, and had of our best banter, shame Sam couldn’t stay around to get involved.

image

And that brings us onto August. The summer month! Woo! I have lots planned over my weekends in August. A road trip to Phil’s pad for a birthday party is definitely what I’m looking forward too the most. There is no better banter than Lauren and Heather together… exhibit A.

I Predict The Past

This is a good opportunity to look at a ‘typical’ week since I’ve started placement. I say typical because every week is invariably different, but still serves as an example in itself.

Last week started with climbing on Monday evening. I think I’ve already said that I want to get back into climbing this year, and part of that is my goal of going climbing every week. It’s difficult at the moment because my climbing partners (Jonsey and Lauren) are not in Guildford, so I’ve been climbing on my own the first two times. It’s been a good way to ease into it, but I’m glad I’ve found a climbing buddy to go with this week :D

Tuesday was a crazy day. I spent the day at work making labels for jack fields on the OB truck (and if you didn’t understand that sentence you’ll understand why I’m not talking about what I’m doing on placement in much detail on the blog…) Then I went from work straight to my favourite restaurant, Wagamammas. A few friends and I had a meal then went ice skating at the Guildford Spectrum. Definitely something I need to find time to do more often, and I realised that my friend Katherine is amazing at figure skating!

On Wednesday I was sent to the Emirates stadium again to configure, install and troubleshoot more TV’s. Then, in the evening, I made the most of being in London and went to visit the folks. We went to Victoria’s for a spot of cider and a mini-celebration about my good news.

My good news was about work. I’m going to Switzerland for a few weeks for Sony. I’ve been assigned to an exciting project designing, installing, testing and maintaining a system for a Swiss broadcaster. I’m not sure how much I’m allowed to say without breaking an NDA, but needless to say it’s quite exciting and an opportunity I wasn’t about to let pass me by!

On Thursday, work was a bit slow for the first time in days. While that sounds like a good thing, you should know I love being busy, and I’m itching to get started on the Swiss project. So I did a lot of research and generally kept myself busy. In the evening, Ben came over and we did some MAD TV editing.

That brings us to the weekend, which was far from typical and requires a whole post of it’s own! Mum had organised a family gathering for her dad’s 80th and everyone came along. Oh, and we were camping in a barn :P

See you all, maybe tomorrow, for that story :)

  • Happiness. 10 out of 10
  • Tiredness. 5 out of 5 (I knew I would be)
  • Free Time. 0 out of 5 (which is a bit overkill, but I do love it)
  • Last Meal. Strudel. How many times is that now?
  • Song of the day. The Kooks – Inside In/Inside Out Album
  • Thought for the day. If public transport fails from a single signal failure, bring on the Olympics :D
  • What I’m Doing Now. Finishing the latest MAD TV report with Ben and Claire, look out for it on www.madtvsurrey.co.uk tomorrow…

My Constants

Normality is a word that doesn’t have a meaning to me at the moment. Lots of things in my life are changing or taking a turn, but the last few days at my sisters and my parents has reminded me that I still have the most important thing in life that isn’t going anywhere, family.

I’ve moved house in the last week. It’s not been very stressful, i’ve taken my sweet time unpacking and it’s helped knowing the last person to live in my room really well. Also, everyone in the house has been living there for a year, so they’re all quite settled which means I’m going into a house that already has a good atmosphere and feels lived in. Much better than when I moved into Zion last year and everything was bare.

I’m also starting my placement today! If you’re wondering how this is up, I wrote it yesterday :) Right now I’ll have already had a couple hours working at SONY! I couldn’t be looking forward to this experience any more. It’s weird to have such a build up to this job which I know will change my life by giving me invaluable experience at one of the best technology companies in the world. It’s so exciting! That doesn’t mean I’m not nervous, but they’re good nerves rather than bad nerves.

It helps knowing that I’m not only starting with someone else on my first day, but there’s also an overlap with the current placement students, so there’s plenty of people who know exactly what I’m going through who can help answer any questions and show me the ropes.

I’m hoping to have a post up tomorrow about my first day, so stay tuned :D

  • Happiness. 7 out of 10 (3-day headache is annoying)
  • Tiredness. 2 out of 5 (up at 6:30am tomorrow for work!)
  • Workload. 0 out of 10 (hell’s yea!)
  • Last Meal. Cereal
  • Song of the day. Train – Drops Of Jupiter
  • Thought for the day. Given the infinite expanse of the universe, you'd like to think that all possibilities are probable
  • What I’m Doing Now. Getting ready to show my parents the new house and have a BBQ in the garden :)

May: The Best Moment

May, a month of two halves. It all started with Jake coming to visit….

DSCF2947

It was such a great few days. We went to Rubix, had a BBQ and went to town… and there was non-stop banter all weekend.

After Jake left there was the small matter of coursework to attend to. I spent the next two weeks working very hard on two bits of coursework and finishing off a third. Come the 24th of May I was a free man… well, expect for those exams looming, but we prefer not to mention those…

Only a couple moment’s really stand out for me from May since Jake left, but that’s not because life has been boring, it’s just because it’s at such a high all the time the great moments blend in and it’s only the extraordinary that makes a lasing impact.

So what made the lasting impact this month? The runner-up is the Student Awards. MAD TV won best Special Interest Society of the Year, Mike Frazer won Best Student Media and MadSoc won Best Society. Everyone had such a brilliant evening and no-one was as impressed as I was with the ‘MAD umbrella’ walking away with so many awards!

I guess the reason this night doesn’t make number one is because I didn’t win Student Trainer of the Year award. That would’ve been the icing on the cake, but alas, the best man won, and congratulations to Matt Clifford.

So the best moment of the month was in fact Frankie and Mike’s joint birthday BBQ. Last Saturday was such a lovely day for a BBQ and it was brilliant to spend it with loads of friends in the garden soaking up the sunshine.

As a consequence of conversations that happened that evening, my plans for the summer could be changing quite drastically. Once the tenancy finishes on my current house at the end of June, I planned to live at home for 6 weeks before moving into the new house in mid-august. But, Frankie and Claire, the left two girls in the above picture, may have a spare room for me at their house. That’ll make it a lot easier to commute to Basingstoke and I won’t have to worry about moving all my stuff back home and back again. I’ll hopefully find out in the next few days what is happening, but I’m really excited about the possibility :D

It is customary for me to ‘pre-hash’ the coming month at this point in these posts, but since June is exam month, I’d rather not. Instead, here’s a picture I took on Saturday of a regular sight in our house… tickle time.

Speak to you soon :) x

The Future’s Bright…

The last few days have been productive from many a standpoint. And nothing shows up more in this view than revision. Finally. Exams are almost here and my brain needs filling… and so it begins.

I also handed in my last coursework on Tuesday after demoing on Monday. Look at my last post to see how you can download my coursework and play with it yourself… honestly, it’s not as boring as it may sound!

What else? I’m going to see my sister! I booked tickets today to see my sister for a few days at the end of June. After my exams I have two weeks before my placement starts. The first week I’m spending in Guildford in the house chilling and celebrating both Anne and Josh’s birthdays! (I bought their presents today :D) In the second week I’m now going to see Becky! I can’t wait!

I’ve also found out more information about my placement from the employment agency that I’m being contracted under, so I should be signing a contract very soon… good times!

Keep enjoying your lives and I’ll catch up with you all very soon… sweet dreams.

  • Happiness. 8.5 out of 10
  • Tiredness. 4 out of 5
  • Workload. 9 out of 10
  • Last Meal. Chicken nuggets and chips.
  • Song of the day. Train – Hey, Soul Sister (good video too)
  • Thought for the day. You don't have to be great to get started, but you have to get started to be great.
  • What I’m Doing Now. Sleep, before day three of revision.

Come What May

Let’s bring on the Mayhem, and see what’s going on in my world.

May started off with Jake coming to visit. What a whirlwind of craziness that turned out to be. We went to Rubix on Friday night and met a lot of people. It was a great night just talking to people and dancing. Oh yea, and drinking…

DSCF2947

Saturday was BBQ day. Mother nature threatened to ruin the affair, but in the end saw we were just having fun and decided to leave us to eating meat and enjoying talking the afternoon away. All my housemates invited their friends too and it made for quite the party, we’re already thinking about when the next one should be!

DSCF2980

On Sunday it was time to go to Wagamama’s (see my last post) and then off to a concert put on by the music department called Free For All. There was some great music and more jolly japes.

The following day Jake left and I felt it was time to catch up on many hours of lost sleep.

Then this week has definitely been about getting back into the swing of things and getting coursework done. On Tuesday evening Josh and I felt it was time to finish our joint Media Project, so we got that pretty much wrapped up with just a small bit left to do. The rest of the week we’ve finished off our other joint coursework for programming, so that’s all been a good weight of my shoulders.

Lecturers are starting to wrap up modules and I’m realising there’s never been a better time to start revising. I’ve just got one more coursework to do that I’ve been putting off for weeks because I’m not sure how to do it, but it’s come to the crunch now… That’s definitely the task for this week. Then revision hits full on.

I’m aware that this blog is one of the first things that suffers when I get snowed in with life, but I’ve got a few treats up my sleeve for the coming weeks. I want to get you up to scratch about my house next year, and I have a few things to say about my course. Oh, and some MAD TV things. Until then…

  • Happiness. 7 out of 10
  • Tiredness. 2 out of 5
  • Workload. 9.9 out of 10
  • Last Meal. Coco pops (they were on offer :P)
  • Song of the day. The King Blues – Blood On My Hands
  • Thought for the day. Never regret anything that made you smile.
  • What I’m Doing Now. Having an undeserved lazy day… but in my defence, it’s the first one in a while (well, since Monday…) OK, fine. I’ll do some work……… later… :P

April: The Best Moment

April was my month off for Easter. I’m not quite sure why the university felt that I needed a month off for Easter, in fact I found the whole thing a bit too much to handle. I spent a week at home, the first time I’d actually spent any real amount of time with my parents for almost a year now. But I also spent a lot of it back in Guildford and getting work done.

To that end, April was a mixed month. Without lectures and the daily slog of university life, I found myself enjoying the lighter things in life. Going to see The IT Crowd being filmed with a couple of friends was something I’ve wanted to do for a long time now, and I finally got that chance in April. Admittedly, we missed out on the first attempt by failing to follow a SatNav, causing us to get there about 10 minutes later than we should have been in order to get seats. But hey, hey, all good intentions meant we ended up going to Guildford Spectrum for a couple games of Bowling, followed by my first taste of Wagamama’s, a sort of noodle restaurant that has an interesting atmosphere and dishes not seen anywhere else.

Wagamamma’s reminds me of Chinese food. And unlike any take-away, it actually has all the rich flavours and spices you would expect from proper Chinese food. I definitely have a soft spot for Chinese food from my visits to China a few years ago, and I maintain that half the experience of Chinese food comes from the culture they try to reflect in their dishes. And while Wagamama’s is nowhere near that in reality, it certainly puts a new twist on other British restaurants and is heading in the right direction.

Coming back from the Wagamama’s side-note, I think April has been my favourite month of 2010 so far. It’s had up’s and down’s with revision, coursework and exam stress looming; but the trips to London, my cousin and sister visiting, as well a wedding and a few nights out made April a month to remember. But what was the best part?

It’s a tough one, and a very close call, but The King Blues gig was incredible and beats everything else. They were so good! My favourite band at the moment, and have been for almost a year now. They played all my favourite songs, as well as 5 Bottles of Shampoo, their Dizzie Rascal cover, I Got Love, and a lot of songs from their upcoming album. It was a brilliant night!

image

May is going to be completely different month, lots of revision and coursework and exam stress. I’m going to try and have fun in moderation, but there is a time and a place to start working, and university is all about making that balance. And never has it been more important than now…

Guilty Pleasures

Why is it that around this time of year, any fun to be had is followed by guilt that the time should have been spent revising and doing work. This is where my outlook on life “we’ve only got one life, lets use it” reaches a paradox between the potential future benefits, or the present losses. Balance and priorities are all words I’ve used to describe this before, and this time is no different.

On Monday my sister Becky paid a visit, and it was amazing to see her. I love my sister so much, and it was great to go to town and have lunch. I love seeing Alastair and Jordan grow up a little bit every time I see them. This time Alastair has started saying “Has it got milk in?” pointing at every bit of food he sees, it’s so cewute :P

DSCF2911

Also on Monday, Geoffrey (AKA Josh) returned to the house! That means all the guys are back! A little  catch up session ensued and it’s great to have people in the house again!

In the evening I went over to Criddle’s for a night of Board Games ^_^

On Tuesday a load of us heading into London for a day out, and to see Russell Howard’s Good News show being filmed live! I’m getting used to all this TV audience malarkey in the last few weeks :D It was absolutely hilarious and a really great day out all around. Keep an eye out for yours truly in the audience on Friday’s show!

The rest of this week is definitely work, work, and work. It has to be! Stay safe and catch you all soon :)

  • Happiness. 8 out of 10
  • Tiredness. 1 out of 5
  • Workload. 10 out of 10

  • Thought for the day. Never assume unless otherwise stated
  • What I’m Doing Now. About to go onto campus for work-related purposes…

Ants in my kitchen!

Work has been restored as a verb in my dictionary this week after getting a start on most of my revision and coursework. Still lots and lots to do, but at least progress is being slowly made.

Come Friday afternoon it was time to relax, for the weekend had arrived rather suddenly. I went out to a pub in town with some chemists before eating at Wagamamma’s. That is the second time I’ve ever eaten there and I love the food. It’s got such a rich taste and very filling. Once we we’re all noodled out, it was time to be strudeled out (yes, strudeled has been a verb in my dictionary for some time…). So back to my place for dessert and Monopoly. Had a great evening and it was a great way to start the week.

On Saturday I headed home to go to a wedding. It was the wedding of my old babysitter (as one link goes…) and it was such a lovely afternoon. It was the first church wedding I’ve ever attended and it’s such a great experience, I recommend everyone I know to get married as soon as possible :P

Sunday was back working at Tote. Long day taking bets, but still enjoyable nonetheless. I’m working again next Saturday, so trying to make the most of Easter while I can…

Next week is going to be another week of revision and coursework, but it has to be done…

The video from the boat trip at the end of March has subsequently been finished this week:

  • Happiness. 6 out of 10
  • Tiredness. 3 out of 5 (was sleeping on the train :P)
  • Workload. 10 out of 10
  • Last Meal. Sandwiches while at Ascot
  • Song of the day. Daniel Powter – Bad Day
  • Thought for the day. talk less. say more.
  • What I’m Doing Now. Looking at the 4 poems I wrote on the train yesterday without really thinking, and trying to decide what they mean…
