The One And Only!

And so it begins…

after a day working at Ascot on Saturday, in the evening Julie and Sophie came to my house for dinner. It was a good laugh.

Then yesterday I spent the morning being a fresher’s angel and got to move lots of tiny fresher’s into their rooms, it was really exciting!

In the afternoon I setup video in the union of the big opening night. Didn’t go exactly as planned because their weren’t a lot of people to help out. During the gig I was only needed for a small part of it, so I spent most time with my various groups of friends clubbing. I had such a good time, and it felt sooooo good to be back in the union again. I love it! And seeing everyone again! And hearing all the summer anthems bring played! Such a contrast to the awkwardness I remember from last years first night for me.

Spent way to long packing down the gig once it had finished and then got very little sleep. And here I am. Ready to do it all again today. More video to setup and more people to meet. It’s going to be the craziest week of my life. No doubt. And I'm loving every millisecond of it!!!!

  • Happiness. 12 out of 10 (those things annoying me seem like they can wait a week…)
  • Tiredness. 5 out of 5 (and it’s only going to get worse…)
  • Last Meal. Just had breakfast cereal… but don’t have anything to drink :(
  • Song of the day. Jim Jamison – I’m Always Here (Baywatch Theme)
  • Thought for the day. Wot’s Occurin?! (Thanks Criddle!)
  • What I’m Doing Now. Not sleeping or working :(

Punctured Tyre

The video went down well yesterday. It was the biggest “premiere” I’ve ever had of something I’d created before. There was a round of applause at the end, so that makes it worth while. I’m a bit annoyed at the union for how unorganised they were with the briefing, but I should know by now that they never tell anyone what they’re doing…

After the briefing I went to Julie & Sophie’s house to check it out, then I had to go to Halfords to replace the inner tube on my bike’s tyre :(

Anne and Viv arrived at the house yesterday, so only Josh to go and we have a full house! We need to actually all sit down and just get to know each other better, I look forward to whenever that happens.

Then in the evening me and Julie went to channies for some proper Kopparberg cider! Love it :D

Today I’m going to Ascot for another day of working for the Tote. I woke up this morning to find that I hadn’t bought a pair of black trousers so I’m having to compromise by using the trousers from the suit James’ WeSuit company made for me! They fit perfectly, but they’re more of a grey than a black :S Hopefully they won’t be a problem.

  • Happiness. 9 out of 10 (A couple things a annoying me)
  • Tiredness. 4 out of 5 (but I had lots of sleep?!)
  • Last Meal. Just had breakfast cereal…
  • Song of the day. DJ Ironik ft Elton John – Tiny Dancer
  • Thought for the day. Forgot to pick up a camera yesterday that I was going to use on Sunday :(
  • What I’m Doing Now. About to leave and go to work!

PS I’ve put up the video I made of James’ Graduation in 2005 as my latest old video to go online, take a look.

Battle Without Honour or Humanity

So the health and safety video is finished and all ready to show on Friday. Now I just need to figure out how I’m going to project it and how to plug it into the sound system…

Went to a BBQ today at Chris’s house (ex-housemate), great to catch up with everyone there and it’s made me even more excited about this year. Don’t know why I’m looking forward to it so much, I’m going to have tons of work, but get the feeling I’m going to enjoy some of it more this year which should make things like labs easier to cope with. You can watch me slowly eat those words in the next month, but that’s how it is.

I really want my timetable so I know when my lectures are. Part of it is just curiosity, but its also so I can plan to see my sister for her wedding! Yup, that’s right, wedding! It makes me so happy to think that in just over a month my big sister is going to married!!!! I can’t physically express my excitement in only text.

Tomorrow more people start arriving into Guildford! By Monday all my friends will once again be within walking distance of me! The way it should be! Exclamation mark!

I’ve decided today that I’m going to start putting all my old videos on YouTube, so you might want to start paying attention to that “YouTube Videos” section on the right >>>>

I’ve started with my 16th Birthday Party video. It’s rubbish, I know. But its the first 3 minutes ever recorded on my camcorder, so it not only has sentimental value, but it seems like an apt video to start on. As you will find out later, it’s not technically the first video I ever made as I had a go with the video mode on dad’s digital camera before then… and most of those videos are quite embarrassing.

Keep well, and make sure to always make the most of who you are.

  • Happiness. 10 out of 10 (“still” you day? yes, still.)
  • Tiredness. 5 out of 5
  • Last Meal. BBQ
  • Song of the day. Tomoyasu Hotei - Battle Without Honor or Humanity (give it 21 seconds and you’ll recognise it)
  • Thought for the day. I have lots to think about at the moment
  • What I’m Doing Now. Not sleeping, which is the opposite to what I should be doing…

Back – Bigger & Better Than Ever!

So I arrived in Guildford last Thursday evening and since then I haven’t stopped.

One of my latest endeavours is Technical Director of MadTV. MadTV is a student-run news team who produce a regular student news program to be distributed online. It’s a very new team, only setup last year, and still finding its way in terms of schedule and its place in the union media channel. MadTV’s latest challenge is to produce a health & safety video for the fresher’s angels briefing. Without going into a sub-explanation on what fresher’s angels are, they are essentially students who have offered to help fresher’s move in to their accommodation on moving in day by carrying boxes, directing traffic and so on.

On Sunday we filmed the footage we needed for the video using a very nice camera hired from the Media Labs. I then took that home and have been slowly editing it for the last day. It’s looking good and it’s great to be learning how to use a new editing package at the same time. Oh, did I mention the briefing is on Friday? And there will be 230 people there to watch it. Forget the premiere at my birthday party, this is it: Filmed, edited and shown in only 6 days. Bring it on!

As it happens I’m also a fresher’s angel and have to attend the briefing despite having made the video! I think that’s funny.

What else have I been doing? As if that wasn’t enough. Well besides from unpacking (which I assure you is done… mostly) I’ve been visiting other people’s houses. Turns out most of the people I know are this side of campus anyway, so I’m really quid’s in on the whole situation.

I’ve also realised that a 20 minute walk to university from my house is a 5 minute cycle ride, love it. Haven’t been on my bike in ages, and it’s great to be on it again.

It’s great to be back one year later. I feel so much more focused now, I know what to expect and I’m still pushing my boundaries in terms of the MadTV video and some of the things I’m organising with Stage Crew for fresher’s week. Busy. Yes. But I wouldn’t want it any other way…

  • Happiness. 10 out of 10 (couldn’t be happier)
  • Tiredness. 5 out of 5
  • Last Meal. Spaghetti on toast
  • Song of the day. Taylor Swift – Love Story
  • Thought for the day. If I’m this busy now, what about when I start lectures again?
  • What I’m Doing Now. Editing the H&S video and looking forward to another very busy day tomorrow. Might get quieter after that… depending on how tomorrow goes…

Why Stop?

Been continuing the birthday celebrations in one way or another the last few days.

On Monday Beth bought me some Kopparberg (she knows the way to make Charles happy now) and we sat in the garden talking which may not sound like much, but it was great to just chill and talk to each other without any distractions (except chicken goujons, but that’s another story)

Tuesday I went climbing with Lauren and Sophie Jones. I feel like I have to make the distinction between “Sophie” and Sophie Jones to avoid confusion… anyway, it turned into a kind of marathon climbing session for about 2.5 hours. Admittedly, we may have talked a lot in that time, but what do you expect. We all had lots to say about our summers! Then in the evening I went to the pub with Matthew and a lot of his friends. I’m really excited for Matthew at the moment because he’s about to start his first year at Oxford, and I know he’s going to love it just as much as I’ve loved my first year!

Yesterday I met up with Beth and one of her work friends at London Bridge to once again abuse the free events on at The Scoop. This time we went to see Slumdog Millionaire, I’d seen it before, but it’s such a good film that I felt it was worth paying nothing to see it again :)

Today I’m off. Back to Guildford. I feel like my summer is coming to a close and I need to start getting myself into gear again to start working soon. But there’s still lots and lots of fun to be had before all that work malarkey kicks off.

  • Happiness. 10 out of 10 (or close enough… to the near)
  • Tiredness. 4 out of 5
  • Last Meal. Jacket Potato with lots of tuna sweetcorn :D
  • Song of the day. Taylor Swift – You Belong With Me
  • Thought for the day. Do I worry too much?
  • What I’m Doing Now. Once again, I have to admit to writing this in bed at 2:30am… Thinking about all the packing I have to do tomorrow, fun times…

The Weekend Part 3: Sunday

Got up before my alarm because Jake came into my room. Went downstairs to find that a tornado had swept through the garden during the night leaving a devastating wreck of plates, food and cans. So I did what any respecting son would do in that situation and sought shelter in the still dimly-lit living room for an hour or so. Then with an army of motivation the clean-up operation began. Clearing everything in sight. Since many hands make light work, this actually didn’t take that long.

Once the kitchen was in a recognisable state once more we found the hobs and Phil set about making a “phil-english” breakfast for 8 people. One hour and a few fire alarms later, we were all sitting around the dining table enjoying the wondrous mountain of calories Phil had piled onto our plates.

After my stomach was full to exploding point people started to leave. Before I knew it, mum and dad were back and we had Becky and crew arrive. Since we discovered Outback Steakhouse had shut down we chose an alternate eating establishment to chew at.

To my surprise, all the steak on my plate went into my belly, along with the phil-english, making me very fat. On top of that I got a tribal call and response verse with accompanying drums to celebrate my birthday. This chorus came bearing a comfortably sized ice cream and candle, all but the candle then disappeared.

Back at home again it was time for champagne and… cake! Can I just say thank you to Beth for an amazing cake, and to Eileen and Alan for helping drink the champagne :)

After those celebrations, you’d think it would be time to call it the end of my birthday extravaganza. But Boris had other plans as he’d kindly organised birthday fireworks down by the Thames. So picking up more motley crew in the form of Victoria, Susanne and Keith we set off to Waterloo. And very good it was too! A fantastic end to a brilliant weekend.

I’d just like to post a quick thank you to everyone below who helped me celebrate my 20th Birthday in the best way I could have hoped: Mum, Dad, James, Beth, Becky, Barry, Jordan, Alastair, Phil, Matthew, Eve, Ben, Kevin, Murat, Michael, Lauren, Hugh, Julie, Jake, Josh, Jess, Daisy, Alan, Eileen, Victoria, Susanne and Keith.

Bring on a whole year of being 20!

Special Post #20: Happy Birthday Blog

It was at exactly this time 1 year ago I wrote my first post on this blog. It actually makes me quite emotional to think who I was a year ago.

I feel that university has brought me out of my shell so much: not changed me into someone else, or made me someone I’m not, but instead built on who I was before and made it better. I’m more confident now to do new things, I have more confidence in myself and my abilities both academically and in social situations, I’ve learnt that I’m more like everyone else than I thought, and that everyone in life has a fascinating and remarkable story, one that can be told differently every time and thats message changes with every new day that brings you to explore your boundaries.

A year ago I had no idea what to expect, and could never have hoped to be where I am today. The last year has been a year of firsts in many ways, but also a year for truly loving life. Sure there have been some rough times, but they were there for good reason. If the whole landscape was a peak, how would you know it was a mountain?

I can pick moments of the last year that have meant the most to me, and I’m sure I’ll miss loads out, but these come to mind:

  • Spending a week with my sister in her new house before going to uni for the first time and leaving home
  • Moving in day. Leaving church, packing my life into a Yaris and feeling sick when we arrived at uni. So overwhelmed when I got to my room and then having to truly say goodbye to my parents for the first time.
  • Moments later meeting Josh at the meet & greet.
  • Ice skating with Josh, when we actually got to know each other.
  • The climbing trip weekend, finally an outlet for my love of climbing!
  • The Fratellis in Brighton and then the next day having an exam.
  • X Factor Christmas Staff Party when I was the video man for the day, fell in love with video stuff.
  • Christmas Day at Becky’s!
  • New Year’s Eve with Jake, feeling sick :(
  • Snow Day at university!
  • Searching for a house, and finding one!
  • Lab Project with Faizan, all those long nights in the library paying off
  • Day out in London with Sophie over Easter
  • Going back to university a week early, spent a whole day talking to Josh. Had the conversation of my life and loved every second of it.
  • The following week, Tuesday evening
  • Revising with Josh, the jokes we had
  • Exam week, the stress
  • EOTYS week, especially the last night and the lake party afterwards
  • Saying goodbye
  • Royal Ascot week
  • Getting my results!
  • Moving in to my new house!
  • Guilfest
  • The boat trips! In particular:
    • Frankie & Bennie’s
    • Many a time spent talking to Phil on the back of the boat
    • Evening spent drinking with Jake and Phil
    • One night talking to Barry for hours
  • My best birthday ever!
  • The fact I get to do it all again starting in a few weeks!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m looking forward to sharing it all with you this time round. And if I’m going to fast or assuming you know something when you don’t, give us a note and I’ll fill you in.

  • Happiness. 12 out of 10 (when 11 out of 10 just isn’t enough)
  • Tiredness. 4.5 out of 5
  • Last Meal. Sausage casserole (very, very tasty indeed)
  • Song of the day. JLS – Beat Again (annoyingly catchy)
  • Thought for the day. True happiness is when you know that you feel the best you've ever felt... and that it can only get better
  • What I’m Doing Now. Actually writing this at 2am, so should be sleeping :S

The Weekend Part 2: Saturday

Got up at 10am and instantly regretted it. It’s not worth dwelling on this point too much, but suffice to say that the next few hours were taken with care.

With everyone up and not raring to go, by about 11:45am we decided we best get started preparing the food since people were arriving from 12pm. We pretty much had a salad down before Lauren arrived. Then I got Hugh from the station. That gave us excuse enough to sit in the garden and chat. Matthew and Eve arrived and joined us.

Beyond that, we started the BBQ about 2:30-ish and didn’t stop until much, much later. Everyone turned up and the food and drink flowed…

Surprise of the year goes to Becky and Barry for coming all the way from Sheffield to join the party, which I had no idea was going to happen. From when that happened at about 6pm I couldn’t stop smiling. Josh and Jess turned up and I spoke to them for a bit to catch up on their summers.

We watched the “I’m On A Boat Narrowboat Edition Featuring Sousant”, which was definitely a personal highlight for me. It went down really well and I was so pleased to be able to show it to so many people at once, most of whom feature.

I think we totalled near 20 when it came time to sing happy birthday.

After that, it was dessert time. Jelly, ice cream, chocolate cake and chocolate. We moved into the living room as it got dark to watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I may have briefly fallen asleep at this point.

I can only be vague as to what happened after this. Some time was spent in the summerhouse talking and eating steak at about midnight. Then we we’re all inside watching things on YouTube, talking and listening to music for a while. Being in the bathroom at 3am brushing my teeth…

The Weekend Part 1: Friday

So in the run up to my big, birthday bonanza weekend, I had Wednesday and Thursday largely to myself. I’ll be honest, I don’t really remember what I did then, but I definitely spent a lot of time organising the birthday madness.

On Friday morning Phil arrived in Balham at 11:30am. James drove us to ASDA where Phil and I spent almost 2 hours buying food for the BBQ. We didn’t even have to buy the meat, that was purchased by Mum at the butchers later the same day. After emptying my pocket of a substantial sum of money, and filling the car (and subsequently the fridge) with tons of chocolate, cakes, crisps, biscuits, bacon, sausages, fruit, vegetables, cider, cider, cider and more cider, me and Phil made sandwiches and sat in the garden for a break. Not 10 minutes later (and I hadn’t even finished my sandwich) Matthew arrived. A few minutes after that Ben and Kevin turned up too. We sat around in the garden, catching up and waiting for Murat. Once Murat had arrived we went to the 99p store to buy chocolate fingers, an essential ingredient to any party. With that task complete we spent a couple more hours talking in the living room, sharing pictures of summer and eating pizza.

By 7:15pm, we were a mass of 9 people on the train heading to Clapham Junction. Once we got there we picked up 1 more to bring our total to 10. Off to Jongleurs!

We had a brilliant time at Jongleurs, there was a great mix of people who I knew from sixth form, university and family which I found refreshing. The comedians we’re definitely funny and I couldn’t fault the evening in the slightest. After the comedy we hung around for a bit longer before going to The Slug And Lettuce for another pint. By this time a few people had left and it was quiet enough to have a slightly drunken conversation between the 6 of us.

We got kicked out of The Slug at close and caught the last train back to Balham. Jokes on the train about the people we sat near not being very well, but that didn’t dampen our spirits :)

Got back to the house and I think we hung around in the living room a bit before going to bed. We had a busy day ahead of us…

Special Post #19: Films of the summer

This summer has been filled with many things, one of those being films. I thought I’d run through them, give you my thoughts and see what you think.

  • Burn After Reading. I watched this right at the start of summer, before I’d even left university. I spent an evening watching it with my then housemates *tear*. We all agreed it was a rubbish film. Don’t see it.
  • One Missed Call. The Japanese version, not the rubbish American version. About getting phone calls from yourself in the future predicting your death. Sounds a bit crazy, but then that’s the Japanese. I’d say this is definitely worth seeing if your into horror films, but not one to blew your socks off.
  • Down To You. Almost forgot about this one! Great little love film set in New York. Love the scene where they pick “they’re song” that’s the part of this film that sticks in my mind.
  • Star Trek. Me and Barry missed the boat with the new Star Trk film, so we both went to see it at the cinema after everyone we knew had already seen it and said it was brilliant. Having never watched an episode of Star Trek in my life, I thought it was easy to follow and had an interesting storyline. Special effects obviously featured, but you should see it for Leonard Nimoy’s appearance alone!
  • The Hangover. Hands down the best film I’ve seen in a long time. About a group of guys who have a crazy night in Vegas and try to figure out what happened. Comedy genius, actually laughing out loud in the cinema, something I never do! See it now, or else…
  • Transformers 2. I don’t get the whole Megan Fox thing, but this film was still good. The end scene dragged on wa-ay to long though. Could have been 10 times shorter, but still good. Saved by the cool robots and Shia Labeouf.
  • Harry Potter. The new one. What can I say? It’s Harry Potter. Didn’t think it was anything to write home about, but still have a soft spot for Hermione, so I could watch it again :)
  • Taking Of Pelham 123. Denzel Washington is amazing in this film, and with the plot as good as it is, I’d recommend it. I thought the overall concept of the film was a bit dry at first, hijacking a train for money, but towards the end things started to click and overall made a good film great.
  • GI Joe. Can’t believe I was dragged along to see this kid’s film… but nethertheless, it wasn’t bad, If 100% predicable.
  • Serendipity. Killed an hour and a half one afternoon. I’d seen it before, but love the idea of trying to find the soul mate you once met.
  • The Fallow Field. Seeing my name in the credits is enough for me to love this film, but even without that it’s a good, solid horror with all the usual tension and jumpy bits.
  • The Cottage. Sounds scary? That’s what I thought. Nope. It’s a comedy about two guys kidnapping a model for money. Very gory and not very good.
  • District 9. Saw this today and it was brilliant. I love Peter Jackson’s film’s anyway, but this had the right balance of Sci-Fi and real life. Emotional, action-packed, thoughtful sci-fi with a fantastically thought out plot. Couldn’t see it being done any better. And left open for a sequel… winner!

In conclusion, see The Hangover and District 9, you won’t regret it.

99% Uptime

My last post was unusually positive. But that’s how I feel at the moment. I have nothing to complain about, summer has been brilliant and I wouldn’t change a single second. Really. Not a single second.

But… and it’s only a small but. As we near the end of summer, pressures start to rise on things like finding a placement for my professional training year that starts this time next year. I’ll try and cover that in more depth in a future blog post (he says frantically adding it to the growing list of topics to delve into), but essentially it’s a year spent working somewhere relevant to the course you’re studying. For me that could be places like the BBC, for example.

There are other little things that are bugging me at the moment, but none of them are enough to dampen my spirit in their own right, but together their chorus can sometimes catch me off guard.

Yesterday (Sunday) I went out with ‘the girls’ to see a free theatre production shown outside city hall near tower bridge. Had a great time and loved spending time with everyone. It tends to be very hard to get us all in one place at the same time, so I always treasure it when it happens.

Today I went to Guildford, to sort out a few things. First and foremost was going back to the house and organising my room a bit more. I also met up with a few friends for a pint in the union bar (Channies). I had a good, productive and eventful day and got everything I wanted done.

Tomorrow (or today if your being picky about the time) I have more and more things to do. Sending my camcorder off to the insurers to be fixed (or not, we’ll have to see), working on the church website, fixing a computer then I’m off to the cinema in the afternoon to see Peter Jackson’s new film “District 9”. Been looking forward to seeing that film for months, so should be good, Peter Jackson’s films are always good.

That’s it for now folks!

  • Happiness. 7 out of 10
  • Tiredness. 4.5 out of 5
  • Last Meal. very, very nice pasta :)
  • Song of the day. Lily Allen – Not Fair
  • Thought for the day. Turns out 300 texts a month might not be enough :S
  • What I’m Doing Now. Looking forward to getting a good night’s sleep and hitting tomorrow on the head!

Lights On Green

The last few days have been really good fun. On Monday I left the boat for the last time with Becky, Barry, Jordan & Alastair after we’d been on it together since Thursday.

We drove back to Becky’s in record time. Barry insists that he wasn’t speeding, and since I’d fallen asleep in the back, I can only take his word for it.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it a thousand more times, I love my sister and staying at her house. This time in particular gave me time to take stock of the boat trip, uploading photos and collecting video footage.

I’ve been very busy the last two days editing a video summing up the boat trip titled: “I’m On A Boat!”, but more on that in a future post :p

Got back home today. Always feels strange coming back to this place. Not sure if it’s the things that have changed since my last visit, like re-arranging my bedroom and laying new carpet in the study, or the addition of my cousin Beth, that make it odd, but I still love being home.

Lots to do in the next few days, and lots to look forward too before going back to uni again. Life is too quick at the moment. I don’t know what day it is, what time it is (hence the time I wrote this) or what my next meal is going to be. Life is a blur, with the road falling in place just I reach it and all the lights on green! That what was so nice about being at Becky’s the last few days, I could concentrate on getting my life back in check before this mad rush of barely 3 weeks before I’m back to the further bedlam of university life and all that it brings.

I sat on the train on the way back to London today, alone for the first time in weeks, and just let my mind wonder… and I came to the thought that things couldn’t be better at the moment. Sure there are a few gripes (like my camcorder breaking), but they pale against the good times. And long may it continue.

With my birthday next weekend and preparations for university underway, the next few weeks are not ones to be taken lightly!

  • Happiness. 8 out of 10
  • Tiredness. 6 out of 5
  • Last Meal. Pork! I’m going to miss Becky’s cooking :)
  • Song of the day. Gloria Estefan – Dr. Beat
  • Thought for the day. can you miss someone you've never met?
  • What I’m Doing Now. Trying not to fall asleep writing this!

A little more about the boat

That boat trip was immense!! It was really great to have Sophie, Julie, Lauren and Heather on the boat last week. We had a great time cruising down the river Thames.

We started off in Guildford on Sunday by doing lots of food shopping for the trip. Then we set off after dark for an hour or so just to take the boat for a spin without realising we weren't allowed to boat at night (woops!) and then we moored on lock moorings which your not allowed to do either, so all in all a good start to the trip!

On Monday we went down the River Wey to the Thames at Shepperton. Lauren & Phil did most of the locks and we’re getting pretty efficient at it too… just in time for the river where they’re all done for us by lock-keepers! In the evening we happened to stop right outside a pub, what a shame!

Tuesday we got to Windsor at about 1pm and had a gorgeous pub lunch. The sun was out all the time which just made everything better! Then me and Sophie went off to The Fallow Field screening in Guildford which was really great to see. I spent the whole film smiling to myself whenever a noise I made came up, which was about every 20 seconds so my cheeks were sore by the end…

With the sun still shining we arrived in Henley on Wednesday afternoon with the dingy fully inflated and ready to be taken for a spin. After a few hours of ‘oar-ing’ we found a Wetherspoons to eat at :)

Pimm’s O’clock and cider time happened often, and I barely needed to touch the oven because the girls we’re taking care of all the meals (except full English breakfast which Phil had down to a tee!)

On Thursday one of my friends, Hugh, joined us at Reading. Hugh was over-excited about being on a boat, and rightly so! That night we stopped at Goring so we could pick up Jake the next morning. Then it was BBQ time!

On Friday we picked up Jake from the train station and set off to Abingdon. Spaghetti Bolognaise on the deck is definitely one of the highlights for me. Jake in the danger seat getting closer and closer to the edge :p

Since we were making such good time we got into Oxford at about mid-day on Sunday. Went to a bar and grill for lunch and had steak! Then the girls left on the train leaving the hard core of the crew: Phil, Jake and I.

more to come soon…
